Oil R1 flush?
Hi,
How would you guys recomend flushing an R1 oil system?
The engine has been standing for well over a year so i put a new filter and oil in but...the oil was well up the glass before the 3.8L the service
manual suggests it should take. When then engine is started (now it fires on all 4 cylinders) alot of noise comes from the cam cover maybe not
getting oil up to it?
Or would i be better running it up to temperature and rev it to see if it improves? (dont want to f$*k the engine though)

Flushing carries its own dangers by breaking down the oil you can subject the bearings to excessive wear, also if big lumps of crud have built up this
could release them, maybe lodging in something more vital.
If its rattly at the top and was fine before I would suggest you pluck off the top and see if oil has reached the cams, I am assuming the oil light
has extinquished upon start up.
If not splash some new oil on everything up top, plugs out and crank on the starter motor (taking care not to burn it out) until you see oil being
pumped around.

There is an oil check plug on the left hand side of the head (viewed from the exhaust side), just below the cam cover. Undo that, start the engine,
and if oil dribbles out its probably fine.
Might also need a valve adjustment and shimming? The R1 doesn't use hydraulic tappets so the valves aren't self adjusting.
