Fuel Pump advice

Hi chaps,

Am going to be attempting to run my CBR1000F (1988 Carbs) engine some time in the near future.

The engine came with pretty much everything required bar a fuel pump.

What is the best type of pump to use with this engine as finding the correct one has proven fruitless.

Advice warmly received.

Hi Col

You idealy need a bike fuel pump as they run at lower pressurer compaired to a car. If you use a car fuel pump you will need a pressure regulator.
Try your local motorcycle breakers, Im going to one near me later this week so if you want me to see whats available then let me know.

Yep, the advice I was given is that almost all bike fuel pumps are pretty much the same. My blade runs a Kawazaki 750 pump fine and dandy. I just asked for a bike fuel pump at my local breakers and was given that for £15.
I'd make sure it's off a fairly large bike though just to be safe.

We ran a Facet Redtop pump + regulator on the ZX9C (carbs) engine.

Ran fine, not 100% sure we needed the regulator, but re-assured ourselves with the fact that we had the adjustment if it was needed. It also had a built in filter, which we would have had to get anyway.

The Facet pump's bloody noisy though! Even with rubber mounts...

There can be problems with using a Facet type pump and a regulator, although some have them runnning fine. Because the carbs only need a very low fuel pressure (around 1.5-2psi), the regulator can struggle to reduce the pressure this much without strangling the flowrate of fuel. This means that it is possible that the regulator wont flow enough fuel when at high revs, leaning out the engine and causing problems.
Like I said some have them without problems so its not a universal issue, but Id chose a bike pump every time and a 99p inline filter just to be safe.

We ran a Facet Red Top "works" pump which gives 6.5-7.25psi pressure, along with an adjustable regulator.

It ran fine with our car, but then we rarely ran it at anything other than wide open throttle! For road use this pump would be too much, so 'i'd recommend the 'road' version, which should be fine for occasional track use. This gives 2.5-3.0 psi and when used with a regulator should see you OK for pressure with the advantage that you can adjust it for the track.

Just about any performance accessory outlet sell these components so you shouldn't have much trouble finding them. Expect to pay around £45-50 for the pump kit, and another £25-50 for the regulator (price depends on whether you have a combined filter bowl).
