Turning over blade engine

If I just wanted to turn my blade engine over on the starter can I just connect the battery to the starter motor, if so then is how is it best to connect it?

Hi Rich

Shouldnt be a problem. I ve done it with a screwdriver in the past. Ideally do it via a solenoid. Earth to the body, live to the screw connection on the top. Nice to hear from fellow BECcer just down the road from me (I'm in Horsham).

so why don't you guys come to our newlands corner meets on the first sunday of the month then eh?!!

you just missed one. you could try and follow/get lifts up with hicost, jasper, johnb, stevem etc who are local(ish) to horsham.

Thanks for the info guys.

Jon, engine is just sitting on my floor at the mo with no plugs in anyway so I just wanted a really quick way of turning the engine over as a basic check for any dodgy sounds!

Jim, when you say earth to the body, do you mean the starter motor body? Really good to hear from someone else just down the road, what part of Horsham are you in?

Ned, am definitely going to come to Newlands, unfortunately I couldn't make yesterday and I also can't make 7th March as I am away for the weekend in Yorkshire but rest assured I will be there the one after!

I hope I don't sound a bit thick as far as the bike engine goes it's just that I am used to car engines and a bit wary of causing problems with a bike engine as I don't know much about them.

any part of the casting will do for earthing - preferably the bolt nearest the starter - there's two of them, both used as common Honda earthing points.

I'd connect the positive up first - unless you like sparks when trying to find the starter bolt!

When you do turn it over without plugs, make sure there is no crap or bits of rag inside the plug holes keeping dirt out cos it could get sucked down through the plug hole and will be a right pain to get out even if it doesnt cause any harm! Not done it myself but heard of it happening

Looks like the guys have allready answered your questions.

I live just off Merryfield Drive give me a bell if you fancy kicking tyres / getting some ideas. My car is currently in bits getting ready for summer, which this year includes a second trip to Le Mans, a few track days, sprints and maybe some hillclimbs.

There's loads of help on line either on this forum or the Yahoo BEC list.

Jim,

Part of the reason I am actually building the car is so that I can do exactly what you mentioned.

I had and Elise and did some track days which was great but I really wanted to do some sprints and/or maybe racing and it would be too expensive in the Elise so I took the plunge, sold the Lotus and am building an Indy.

Do you do it through the 750MC? I went to Lydden last year and it was great.

I'd really like to chat sometime about how to get involved and the costs involved if that's ok. Things like licences, insurance, etc.

Like you I ve always fancied a bit of competition but have only done track days to date. Went along to Sutton and Cheam Motor Club last night to get a bit of info on Sprinting and got alot of ideas.

You've got my number, give me a call. I'll get the rev limiter to put the kettle on.
