R1 Exhaust Heat

Hi Guys, had the car idling on the drive for about 15minutes on Sunday, its an 01 R1 with airbox fitted for this test, and the cat, which is straight after the Manifold started glowing. The can, which is a carbon one, also got smokingly hot, too hot to touch in fact, and has since come unstuck from itself, ie the glue or resin has burnt away!
This doesn't sound right to me, but what could be causing all that heat?
Over fuelling, Running lean, blockage?
Anyone got any ideas??

Regards Chris

Lean fuelling usually leads to very high EGT (and possibly melted pistons though you'd be unlucky to do that at idle!)

As above, would suggest its running lean. Have you fitted a dynojet kit at all??

if it was just idling for 15 min with no reving and then you just switched it off. whip the plugs out 1 by 1 and check the colour white and your weak, light chocolate brown OK, sooty black rich, oily black problems
if my blade sat ticking over for 15 min the fan would have been running to cool it down

Sounds like you've not removed/blocked the AIS system. AIS bleads air (at idle and light throttle) into the manifold to help reduce emmisions and WILL make it glow red hot. Block it off by screwing a bolt into the air pipe that originally went to the airbox.

Thanks guys, sort of confirms a few tgoughts i had too.
Dynojet kit not fitted yet, but as i'm not doing any driving at present, surely it should just be as it was in the bike, all be it with the ,AIS system blocked off but there is one breather pipe that wasn't closed off, so will try that, will whip plugs out too.

Will let you know the outcome on the weekend.
Question though, short of keep whipping the plugs out, how do i know when the mixture is right?

The engine itself didn't seem too hot and the rad was still cool. It was just the exhaust.
