stick coils

stick coil mod zzr1100

Hi, Has any one done a stick coil mod on their bec, Have read about zzr1100 being changed to use zx9r stick coils. Has any one on here done one and if so are there any benifits.

If you don't mind the re-wiring thats required then they do tidy up the bay, having no need to make brackets ot mount the original coils.

Can you use standard automotive cable to wire them up or do you need the loom of the original bike?

What you ought to remember is that the ZZR1100 runs only 2 coils and a "wasted spark" system where it sparks 2 plugs simultaneously from the same coil.

If you go over to stick coils how will you wire them up?

Is the resistance of 2 stick coils wired in parallel close enough to the resistance of a single coil pack or will the change in current draw damage the FETs in your CDI?

It is the standard CDI you're running right?

I've done a similar conversion on my "boat anchor". It's a 3SGE Toyota motor and uses ZX9 coilpacks.
When I was in the process of doing all this I remember reading that these coilpacks cannot be wired in pairs, either in series or in parallel.
Someone had tried it and cooked the ECU.
( This may all be complete cobblers, of course.)
I opted, therefore, for a V3 megasquirt ECU with four coil drivers. The coils fire only once per complete cycle.
This requires camshaft position sensing, not just crankshaft sensing as is normally the case.
I only paid £25 for the set of coilpacks, so it might not be too expensive an experiment should it all go tits up!
Unless you frazzle the ECU.....
They can also be finicky when it comes to dwell setting. The megasquirt allows fine adjustment of this. Mine are set at 6ms while cranking, 2.8ms when running IIRC.
A standard ECU won't allow this adjustment, although you could limit the current draw with a ballast resistor arrangement.
I will try and measure the current draw and get back to you.

Hi again. Coil measures 1.2 ohms. How does this compare with a normal coil? I don't have one handy to measure.
Mine are wired up using ordinary cable added on to the short lengths that came with the coils.
