ZX9 gearbox woes
advice / help chaps
I know this has probably come up before, but please humour me !
got a C2 in a locost, engine goes brilliant but the box has started popping out of third under load. How much better are the E series boxes ?
Dilema - do I ?
a. replace box internals with E series (minor faffing appearently due to differing imput and output shaft lengths)
b. replace entire unit with E series motor (wiring, exhaust, carbs and CDI is different)
c. if option b is being considered should I go the extra mile and change to a different power unit entirely, if so which?
budget initially- 600 quid "ish" - though I tend to exhibit a loss of self control when lured by promises of greater BHP and torque !
the more I think about this the less obviuos the answer becomes

c/e gearbox's are about as robust as each other, it was the B's that had a weak gearbox. Spend 600 on the engine, head work, gearbox
refresh

how long have you had it? Are you due an upgrade in power (i.e. are you so bored of it)?
I say sort the gearbox and enjoy the summer. Replace with C box, can't be much wedge. If you start swapping engines then it will be winter
before you finish. Whole engines are £400 on e-bay, although I would talk to malc first.
On the other hand if you are doing this because you like making things and such (rather than driving) then get in there and replace the engine. I
don't think you will get very far with your 600, as I would have thought that to get a reasonable boost over your zx9 that you would have to go
at least to zx10, which is bigish wonga.

the e box has extra bearings in the middle of one of the shafts compared to the c.
Though mine never broke, everyone ive spoken to says that C has the weak box too.

I did 10k on a c model with no problems. I think most bike engines can suffer from g/box problems if they have bad linkages ect

thanks Matt
the engine is mint - approx. 6000 miles, the power is great, but now I have no confidence in the transmission.
General opinion especially the Ninja diehards is that the E box is stronger, but they are talking from a bike perspective. Have only done two track
days and in the process of setting up the flatshifter/generating the biggest grin in history have managed to do some serious damage.
Having just stripped and reassembled the box previous to the last outing at probably a third of the cost of a replacement unit, sticking with the C
leaves a bitter taste if it is likely to do the same again in quick succession.
The reason for posting was to find out peoples experience with 9's in cars.
I really like the 9 but thought a bigger/ different engine might have a more robust box.
thanks to all for replying

From experience the E box is much better than the C
cleaner shifting with less false neutrals, and stronger
If you do decide to change engines.
Carbs will straight swap
Exhaust will straight swap
Cdi is different as there is no cam sensor on an E
wiring is the same, less the cam sensor wires.
I'm about to pull a dead E out of my car, you can have the gearbox free if you either pick up or pay the post.
