Rebuilding a 5VY advice

Basically, I have 5VY which had had a fancy dry sump system fitted. The water pump was external, and the oil pump was run from the water pump chain.
The oil pump packed in on the track but engine was still running, but showing zero oil pressure. The engine had had two seasons hard racing in RGB and some testing days. It had also destroyed a few clutches, and a clutch basket. This with the oil pump bearing also getting in the oil before the filter, I reckoned that the engine needed retiring.
Then I bought another 5VY on Ebay which was in bits but all there.
The plan was to use the bits from both engines to build one good one (not enough bits for two!).
But before I go finding my calipers, and trying to find suppliers for all the gaskets and replaceable bit etc. I was just wondering if it is a worthwhile exercise?
And can a fairly competent engineer type with a typical set of tools do a good job of it??
Any comments welcomed!
Cheers
Ed
