Stator Windings R1

I know of a R1 engined car that seems to blow it's alternator/stator windings frequently. I read on another thread that it would hammer the charging system if your battery isn't up to much... didn't want to hijack the thread so started this one.

My car has had the same reg and stator with no probs for 9k miles. Whereas the other guys seems to go quite frequently from what he's told me. Same engine but in a phoenix.


I know the saying goes if it aint broke don't fix it, but because his has gone so many times it worried me as I'm going to the alps around June doing about 3k miles in 10 days and it'd be a major cock up if it went while I was over there.


I don't know about the other, but mine has a stonking odyssey dry cell battery (new) which would easily spin a 5.7 chevy or larger. So I went for overkill on the battery. Also my car has plenty of airflow whereas his phoenix has a flat floor and runs a bit warmer (around 10degrees). So maybe this could contribute to it?


Just wondering why he's had issues and mine hasn't as I was thinking I may need to do the windings before I go. But it's a bit of a faff and not cheap and maybe not necessary. Surely running warmer could have a big effect on the resistance of the windings and cause them to burn out, maybe why mine hasn't gone?

Mine went once on the bike, and I've done a fair few thousand miles since, and not had any more problems, it was probably heat related as the insulation/laquer had burned allowing the winding to short out.

With repeated failures I'd be looking for a fault somewhere in the electrics as this will exerpt more heat in the windings than lack of engine oil/cooling.

I know it's a worry, but I'd leave it. Put the "other guy's" down to bad luck. You could be changing one that will last for ages for one that will blow in a few miles. A bit like changing a working light bulb just because it's been there for 10 years and find the new one goes pop 10min's after you switch on. If you can get hold of a new one then take it as a spare... then you'll never need it ! I think all the tools needed will be in the convoy.

So it's not an engine out job to repair?

I guess it'd be daft like you say, just gets you thinking. Just don't want a potential trip ruiner waiting to happen!

I believe it can be done in situ but it can't say for sure. Think he has a tool for the job. There was at least one spare stator on the trip last year.
