ETB Speedo Problems.....

My speedo on my F27 is not working, I'm assuming there is power there as it twitches when I switch the ignition on and also displays the odometer reading. I pulled the gauge out and it's manufactured by ETB. I've traced the sensor back to picking up from the propshaft flange on the gearbox. I've had a close look and from research it looks like a 'S11S' 2 wire inductive sensor. It seems to be reading the propshaft bolts as there are no magnets visible on the flange. I'm not sure if there is any way to test the functioning of the sensor? Are they prone to failure? A new sensor is about £65 so don't want to fork out unless I know it's that causing the problem.

In my experience ETB are very helpful. They may suggest some tests you can do or sending the sensor and speedo back to them for testing, but I don't think they will try to get £60 out of you if it is not necessary.

who fitted the speedo? it could be the maget was glued on the bolt and its fallen off, to test it just get any magnet and wave it on front of the sensor!

The speedo was factory fit back in 2000. I have tried waving a
fridge magnet in front of it, but no response. After doing more research I thing it initially would have been setup to read the bolt heads. I suppose it may well be worth contacting ETB, they may know how the F27 factory original set them up. I'll try and have another play tomorrow!

Well, I've got it working. I removed the old 2 wire M18 sensor, and replaced it with an 3 wire M12 proximity switch, which I had lying around in the shed. It works a treat after fettling with the setup, accuracy even seems about right. Just need to make the wiring modifications permanent now, rather than bits of wire thrown over the engine!! Saved me £62+vat for a replacement from manufacturer.
