919 Blade Fuel Pump

My fuel pump is on the way out when I was doing a trackday last weekend. It was struggling to keep the fuel supplied and drawing air in when I was pushing!

Luckily there were loads of bikes there as an endurance race was scheduled for the following day. The bike mechanics recommended a facet red top for the internal workings being much better that my traditional diaphram pump (which they reckoned were wearing out). A bike nut I know has also recommended the red top.

However, researching here and looking at the facet site it appears this isn't the way to go as I will be overfuelling the carbs and the facet red top is not suitable for bike engines.

I have a MNR Vortx, Fireblade 919 carb engine (130bhp).

1. Is the red top unsuitable?
2. Will the FEP04SV from Facet be suitable? http://www.fuelsystem.co.uk/web-facet.pdf
3. If so, does it have a similar internals to the red top?

Basically any fuel pump from a carbed bike from 600cc upward will do the job,vast majority are made by mitsubishi and are of the interuptor type, as in when the floats shut off the supply to the float bowls the back pressure created shuts the pump down, I'm almost certain the electric fuel pump from mg's can be used, again these were interuptor type.

Bike carb's are small, so have small floats which = not a great deal of pressure exerted on the float valve.

SU type pumps, red tops, silver tops etc will push fuel at the limit of the bike carb's ability to control the pressure, use them on a big old SU or weber carb and they will be fine.

IMHO you would be better off using a pump from a big bike, do not worry if its a yam, honda kwak etc, if its a 1000cc bike the pump will flow enough for a 150bhp engine.

You can always run a couple in parallel if you want to play it safe as the weaker one will just shut down earlier.

Saying all that the FEP04SV looks good, I ran a 60104 (the one above) on my 893 blade engine when on carbs, infact its still running today filling my swirl pot !

Self regulating bike pump like the Mitsubishi one mentioned above.. I have one off a zx9r on my car £33 on eBay

This is what Andy bates told me to do, I removed the facet red top and press regulator that was fitted on my car when I got it.

My blade one packed in (after about 5 mins running...dont you love 2nd hand parts!)

I fitted a r1 carbed pump - its worked faultlessly since.

60104 facet pump fitted and no issues on the road - the track will reveal if there is an issue.

One little thing I noticed is there is a bit of noise from the pump - is this normal?

It is mounted a bit higher than I'd like but felt a reasonable compromise for secure and safe location.

Any thoughts/experiences welcome.

Bit of noise is correct, nothing to worry about as it will gently tick on idle.

It will clack badly when out of fuel, pulling air or the fuel supply is limited, like a car with a knackered cam so check the supply is clear.

So look for constricted feed pipes and air leaks if very noisy.

I would have thought with a carbed engine you would have wanted to keep the Fuel pressure constant.

its why i suggested the self regulating Bike pump.
