Emissions/power commander

I need to get my 08 R1 engined indy ready for its IVA retest soon.

Now as for emissions, MK set the power commander up for me, and it passed the Fast idle fine, but was way out at natural idle, i then tried to lean off the fuelling with the buttons on the P.C unit, but i think i managed to increase the fuelling instead as it was then miles off. (i couldn't get the flashing line to go below the middle/0 as it kept timing out!)

Is is possible to get the power commander settings back to where it was before i messed with the buttons? so i could then just use a laptop and lean off the 1000-1500 rpm section?

If i use the buttons and get the flashing bar to the 0/middle, would this be to where MK set it up, or standard map?

Or will i have to just use a laptop and guess to where it was?


Also is there anything else i can do to improve the emissions?

would new spark plugs help? (they are the originals from 2+years ago)?

Would raising the idle help?, its currently around 1100-1200 RPM

Or is it just a case of getting it really hot and playing with the fuelling? (and hope the tester will let me have a few tries)

Also what is the hottest i should let the water/oil temperatures get to? as they got quite high during the test.

I'd expect MK to have set the map with the "bars" at zero. Put them back to that (you just do it the same as you did to adjust them) and then have a look at the PC map with a lap -top and adjust the boxes at idle/zero throttle. Stay away from the boxes around fast idle (2500-3000rpm) as it right there. Can you take it to a friendly MOT station and use their gas tester to adjust. You'd be just guessing otherwise. If you can't then seeing as you didn't fail by much just subtract 10 from whatever is in the boxes.

New plugs might help. Raising the idle might also but without setting it on an emission tester you're just guessing and more than what you have now might not be regarded as "idle".

It's important that you get the cat really hot and that means getting the engine hot doing that. The R1 switches the fan on at 105c so don't panic if you see high temps. It might be worth manually switching the fan. If it comes on/off during the test it's very difficult to hold the revs steady during the test.

Thanks, well I've just retrieved the map thats on the Power commander, and its only really been adjusted between 2000-3250 RPM

And the 500-1500rpm values are all 0.

here is a pic:


So will set these all to around -10, and see what thats like on the test, and adjust from there.

I've not got my map here to check but think -10s is what my 06R1 had to pass.

It'll be the full emission test so the fast idle will be rechecked. Should pass gain but the trick is to keep the throttle steady during the test. Any variation can tip the readings over the edge. Many use the idle screw to lift the revs and beware of the fan tripping in during the test. I had to wire mine to run constant to avoid that after I failed my first SVA.

Yes i found keeping the revs steady was hard, i might try and find something the right length that i can wedge between the throttle bit on TB's.

Ive just found out there is no idle screw on 08 R1's as electronic throttle, so i can't easily change the idle.

I have a fan switch, so will just keep this switched on.

I think i will just chance it, and if slightly wrong, hopefully the tester will give me a few mins, and another go.

Finally managed to change the values, the thing kept cutting out, turned out to be a dodgy usb port on laptop.

I've set the idle at -10, i take it its normal for the engine to sound rather lumpy like this?

Although i have put it back to standard, and will just load that map for the test.

I might see if i can persuade a local tester to let me use his machine to check its now ok, as don't want to really risk another fail.

I dont get why people are putting maps in their ecu's that aren't made for their car. Every engine is different especialy with different exhausts and filters. Why when you go to the expense of fitting a power commander would you not get it set up properly then you know exactly how your engine is performing. As for emissions I invested in a 4 gas analiser to set mine up properly. Without one you are only guessing. So if anyone wants their emissions set up let me know.
