Bike Loom Questions
Bit of an electronics newbie:
- Started getting my head around the R1 (carbed) loom the other day and was wondering what most people do with the unused wires (for example the bike
lighting wires if you're using your own lighting system)? Do you strip them out, or just leave them in and tape 'em up? Personally
I'd like to get rid of them.
- In addition to the R1 fusebox, I need to run more fuses for things like lights, horn, accessories, immobiliser, gauges..... To power the 2nd fusebox
do I just take a feed from the power cable running from the main fuse to the bike fusebox? Or is it better to replace the bike fusebox with a larger
one which houses all fuses?
- Do BECs bother with a 'charge' LED on the dash to signify when power is coming from the alternator rather than the battery? Wasn't
sure if the bike dash displayed this info or not....
Cheers

Although our loom was for a 'blade BEC I guess the principle is very much the same.
I removed all of the wiring and circuits which were unused, together with the original fusebox. Instead I used two 8 fuse box's joined as you
say in parallel. You can still use the original relays as I recall the R1 having two headlights, it also has a horn and gauges so using these may be a
good idea.
Our original clocks don't have a charge indicator though this could be incorporated quite easily. We simply used the outputs from the original
bike engine, afterall the bike doesn't seem to suffer too much from the lack of these extra's.
All you need as an addition to bike electrics for SVA are:
Hazard Lights
Rear Fog Light(s)
Handbrake/Low Fluid Level Indicator
I think that about covers it.

Thanks! Replacing the R1 fusebox with a couple of new ones sounds like a good idea.
Also, there is a permanently powered fuse in the R1 fusebox labelled 'BACKUP', with it's output going to the clocks wiring loom - I
presume I don't need this and that I can use this power feed for my permanently-powered fuses?
Clutch Switch - do people usually short this or not? I understood that with this shorted then I can start the engine in any gear, but without it
shorted I can only start when in neutral (assuming side-stand switch is shorted in both cases).

Anyone know anything about the 'BACKUP' function?
