Electric Reverse

I've read some of the posts about using wiper or starter motors for reverse. How well does this work? Specifically, how do you get smooth operation? Are you trying to vary the output in any way, or is the gear reduction such that it's smooth by virtue of being slow? Do you just activate it with a toggle switch?

Also, what if you're parked on a hill? Will there be adequate torque to pull the car up?

Thanks,

Berk
