R1 identification help
Bit of an odd one this, bear with me!
My R1 engine is (apparently) a 2001 '5JJ' model.
its got 5JJ stamped on the block, and on the carbs. however the thermostat above the plugs says '4XV' (the previous model, 98/99)
also, the main part of the loom and the CDI unit says '5JJ' on a yellow sticker, but a smaller part of it after a large white plug says
'4XV'
is this normal? just a case of newer engines still using parts from older one, or is this something to be worried about!
my main concern is the loom. im guessing the smaller part of the loom is the so-called 'headlight' loom, but if its marked 4xv, will this
mean i need clocks off an older model?!
im confused!
i'll post a pic of the loom when i can access my FTP space..

Don't worry this is normal. Although you have a revised 2000/1 model engine (the 5JJ) many of the parts are still common to the earlier 4XV
model.
I have an injected R1 and that still has many parts that are labelled 4XV.....

thanks paul, thats comforting to know!
heres the loom picture i was on about:
- is the 4xv labelled part the 'lighting' loom that you need to plug the clocks into?
- if so, does the clocks connector differ by year, meaning i need a set of 4xv clocks. or is it the same connector, but i still need 5JJ clocks as
thats what the CDI is..
cheers!

Wiring
Hi,
The wiring does vary between the models. The "small" loom you refer to is the headlight loom that also incorporates the connectors for the
Clocks.
I looked up an online parts catalogue
(http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/parts/home.aspx)
and according to that the headlight loom is different between years
98-99 its 4xv-84359-10-00
2000-1 its 5JJ-84359-10-00
From this I would summise that they are different. You are correct the Cdi's are certainly different. I would check with the supplier of your
engine package and check whether they have bundled bits from different engines for your loom.
Hope that helps
Paul
P.S. I have used Digidash so didn't use the bike clocks - hence I'm not 100% sure on this one.

looks like i'll have to source a 5jj headlight loom then if i want to use the proper clocks.
its not the end of the world though, in theory the engine should run as it is? (but id have to use either a digidash or individual guages)
cheers fella!
