ZX9R regulator problem

Hi all
My battery was getting 18v pushed through it, so i assumed the regulator/rectifier had packed in. have fitted a brand new pattern one today, and the battery is still showing 18v at 2000rpm.
The manual shows two lives coming from the regulator, a white wire which supplies the charging and a brown wire which supplies the fuse box. Both old and new units are showing 18v on the white and 0v on the brown. Have i bought a duff unit or am i missing something?
The alternator checks out as being Ok.

TIA
Al.

Nah, the brown is the main feed to the fuse box, i.e before the fuses.

better have a word on bec list,in car circles reg varies magnetic field in alternator field windings ie more volts to field stronger field more volts out 13.5-14 v would be about right

The brown wire going to the reg needs a 12v ign fed live. If you look at the bike wiring diagram the white wire supplies power to the ignition switch then, when on, the brown wire feeds the fuse box and BACK to the regulator. I assume the regulator uses this to check what voltage is requied by the battery.

Sussed it! and infact you were on the right lines, the brown live wire didn't actually power anything, i'd powered everything up from the white one, somehow this affected the regulator output, as soon as i put the brown into the ignition circuit, everything worked ok.
So the car has been wired wrong from day one, and there was nothing wrong with the original rectifier. Bugger
£75 rectifier going cheap anyone?

Thanx Conrod, fresh pair of eyes and all that!

Sorry Steve
missed your post, due to the giddiness of fixing the thing. Yes your right, spot on diagnosis.

Cheers
Al.
