4th gear possible trouble?

On my trackday today we had a few problems with 4th gear seeming to drop out of gear, or sometimes judder a bit and then pop in or out of gear. I think on the steady drive home too that when i put it into 4th, it dropped back into 3rd after a clunk? anyone know what may be wrong? I did notice the clutch started to spin at peak power now when I had a passenger in the car, but its totally std atm so some springs should sort that out. Was also fine when it was just me in the car.

On another note tho...I had another great day in the Indy, and can honsetly say it gave the Porker GT3 a load of hastle! He pulled over for me in the end!

Got some in car footage too to sort out!

Sounds like the age old dog selector problem.

Should have used a nice car engine..

Welcome to my world

Sounds like the beginning of a worn box possibly.
what shifter are you using? ie are you sure it's giving a full stroke, some paddles may not?

I have done loads of blades with this problem, the jumping out of gear will almost definately be due to worn dogs on the gears themselves. Once the hard outer is worn through the edges become rounded as the metal underneath is very soft. Instead of locking together under load they push apart and smack back against the retaining circlip. Causes can be down to poor shift mechanisms, bent selector forks and tired detent springs.
Whatever you do dont keep driving it as eventually the circlips get popped out of their seats and the gear is free to engage with one it shouldnt - this can lead to massive damage including in several cases I have seen parts of the gear being sent through the cases.
Probably not what you wanted to hear I know but we have a 40 gallon drum here full to the brim with gearsets that have gone the same way.
Pull it down now and you may well prevent more damage and save some money as new gearsets cost a fortune from honda and good second hand boxes are rare
regards
Andy

Andy - I know you're well respected in the fireblade world so unfortunatelly I believe what you're saying. I do have a pretty crap gear shifter mechanism tho so it probably doesnt help. Its also due an oil change and the clutch springs are probably not man enough for the job especially now its been tuned properly so they could be contributing factors. Also with there being very little between on and off on the clutch I think ive not help by getting the lazy foot syndrome abd resting my foot on the clutch sometimes when its happened. Its a 954cc 2003my blade lump, have these been prone to the same kind of failures? Most importantly, if I took the engine out and got it to someone like yourself.....whats the cost of repair likely to be? and is there anything I could/should get done at the same time whilst the box/engine is split? cheers.

What for - it's the gearbox he may have a problem with, not the engine?

just to update on this.....i have adjusted the rose joints on my gear shifting mechanism and it hasnt done it since! I wasnt getting full leverage going up the box. It probably also didnt help that on the trackday I was allowing a friend to use the car too, so the oil wasn't getting much of a chance to cool down properly! oops!

edited to add, went out in it earlier....and it popped into neutral again! bollox!! Ill drain it with oil and strip it down and see whats going!
