5VY R1 won't start
I tried to start the engine today but alas it won't start.
I have no engine management light or fault codes showing and plenty of fuel at the fuel rail.
The engine turns over and the engine management light is on whilst the starter button is pressed and the engine is being cranked but does not fire. Is
it normal for the engine management light to be on whilst being cranked.
I haven't traced any of the cables yet for the side stand or clutch switches, would the engine turn over if it was any of these?
Any other ideas would be appreciated.

i don't think it would attempt to turn over if the side stand switch was activated. Don't know on Yamaha but i know my suzuki
wouldn't attempt to go if the stand was down.
my aim is to build my own locost wether it takes me a week or 10 years to get started, i'm sure i will sometime

well its not going to start if u haven't sorted out the safety features, eg side stand clutch switch etc....
Get yourself a wiring diagram and follow it through... work out the bits that need to be shorted out...

Is this a first time start or has it run before in your car?
I take it you have either as usa loom & ecu or a uk one with the lock & barrel as there is a built in immobilisor on the uk model.
If that is all ok then you may have the lean sensor unplugged or the wrong way up or a sensor unplugged (though you should get an error code)
The yamaha manual has a good diagnosis section. Do the tests on the start inhibitor relay that it suggests (if you have no immobilisor issues), that
will tell you if it thinks it should start.
Drop me an email at kob1178@yahoo.co.uk if you are still striggling and I'll try and talk you through what you need to get the motor running.

Thanks for the offer. It is the first time of starting in the car. My loom was stripped of all parts not needed by a company that prepares race bikes,
they also supplied the USA ECU as I have a UK loom and the barrel was damaged. I am now using the Sierra key and the USA ECU so no immobilizer to
worry about.

These should have already been taken care of but it was just a thought to start with something simple first rather than wading in at the deep end. The
trouble I have is I never did the loom so I don't know where the wires are now for these to check them.

Chris,
My loom is as you say. The wires were moved around at the ECU plug. The instructions I got with the ECU said to move the injector wires around
aswell.
I have tried to see if there is a spark and there isn't. I can not smell petrol at the throttle bodies either and the plugs are dry.
I have spoken to track electronics who supplied the ECU and stripped my loom for me and he thought it could be the crank or cam position sensors. I
have tested these according to the service manual and they test ok so still baffled by this.

Chris,
Thanks for your help this afternoon you are a star I would have been there for years looking for the missing earth.
I spoke to John at Track Electronics who did the loom and fair play to him he said they must have left it out in error and he offered me some money
back. We are all human and mistakes can happen so I declined on the offer. At least he was there on the end of the phone to try and help which counts
for a lot to me.
Once again thanks to you Chris the engine runs a treat .
Cheers
Stu.
