Airbox alteration

I orginally had S/B Individual filters on my engine,After reading through various post I see these are not much good !!

I managed to get the orginal air box for the GPZ1000RX,I made 1 or 2 alterations to this,I blanked off the orginal air ducts, cut a 100mm hole in the side of the box inserted a 100mm piece of pipe (100mm long) and stuck a K&N cone filter I had lying about from an old RS turbo I had.

Is this likely to flow enough air or would I have been better sticking with the 4 individual filters ??

Cheers

Have tried to get a few pics up but can't seem to manage!!!

Most K+N cone filters flow way more than needed (especially one with a 100mm throat). I've got the smallest in their standard range and it'll do 180Bhp, I doubt there'll be a problem with 125Bhp.

you normally want the plenum between the filter and the TBs/carbs to be at least the volume of the engine capacity (unless you're getting fancy with tuned lengths). 100mm of 100mm pipe alone gives you about 700cc so you're not far off even without taking the airbox into account too. The only thing you might need to look at will be if the air inlet is coming in at one end of the airbox the throttle trumpet nearest the inlet will pull 5-10% more air than the ones further away (unless you've got a large amount of space "beyond" the furthest trumpet as a buffer). Some airboxes have sloping "roofs" to equalise the pressure / airflow somewhat (though more often its to do with fitting stuff under bonnets / fairings)...

If you wanted to get really trick you could measure pressure differentials with the old setup and now with the new system to see which one restricts airflow (you can't do it on BHP alone as it will be effected by tuning)....

Hi Ben,

Yep,Your spot on,My filter does come in at 1 side of the box therefore 1 trumpet is directly in the airflow,Is this going to create a problem,The Gpz airbox is not overly big at all so there is no space at the back to act as a buffer !!

You say I have enough to flow 700cc,What could I do to increase this(do I need to increase this ??)

I'm not to clued up on induction side of things,I didn't even realise that the socks were not up to the job even though they would be taking in warm air !!!

Any advice you have mate would be much appreciated.

Cheers Craig
