R1 Not Starting - still not spark?
Hi, Had some problems starting our car and wondered if anyone has any ideas to help us out. So to start its an R1 02-03(5pw)
Gear box is in neutral
Key turned pump primes, dash comes on - rev counter does one revolution and returns, mph and temp displayed, neutral light comes on and yellow engine
light comes on
connect starter and it turns the engine over, Dash lights flicker whilst turning but there is no spark
Heres a list of what we have connected/modified on original loom;
Exup motor replaced with Bobs mini circuit,
Few things extended like crank sensor etc
fuel pump wires lengthened,
main switch brown blue and red connected (ign switch)
Side stand switch - soldered connectors together
Blue yellow and black yellow connected on 10 pin white connector(clutch)
Red black and red white of blue 6 pin connected(blue 6 pin connector engine kill)
And thin blue black and blue yellow connected so both go to the ecu side(this i wasnt sure on but should be main switch just never found the red 2 pin
connector others said this goes to so should they be the thin versions of these wires as the thickk black blue)
Any help would be great
Cheers
Adam

Which way up is your tilt switch? the word "UP" shoud be the top surface.
the rest sounds right from memory.

Are you getting any diagnostic codes displayed?
Does sound like tilt switch. Can replace with a 1/4w 470 ohm resistor.
I have a simplified wiring diagram if it helps.

What we had done with the tilt sensor is super glued and siliconed it in the middle so it couldnt move and then mounted it sideways on the dash so
hopefully wouldnt matter or would you advise changing it

Personally I would dump it and replace with resistor. But for safety I have wired inertia breaker into the circuit (mines off a Renault).

back to your earlier question what would a diagnostics display look like? The two lights that stay on with the clocks are the green neutral and amber
engine light like the one that comes on when you start your regular modern tin top but go out once started. Might look into the resistor thing as it
could have moved and we would never be sure.

The diagnostic codes come up on digital panel of the clocks when the ignition is switched on. usually a two digit number.
The resistors are pennies from Maplin or the like. And very light weight

definitely no error codes all seems quite happy. Il try a resistor in the week as it really cant hurt. also checked the battery and charging it now
although it reads 12.5v which is good should i check amps?

Hi everything you have done is correct so id check the tilt sensor
the error codes come up in the temp display and there 2 diget nos 23 43 etc
see if you have a code

when you turn the key and the clocks wiz round you should see the fuel light ,nuetrel and the engine light,,,, by the time the pump stops priming
you should be left with only the neutral light

hi Malc, In temp we get deg C and Lo, where the mph is displayed there is a number 30 below this and not sure what that is for? also thanks for the
suzuki air sensor you sent my dad with a bit of dremmeling fits real nice.
Afj - happens as you mentioned and as its not got the r1 fuel tank sensor the fuel warning light flashes on then off
Neutral light is always on even when not in neutral as starter turned when in every gear which caused us to push the clutch pedal too far leading to
my other problem earlier in the week so its been quite frustrating lol

The neutral light symptom sounds very strange as it is a mechanical switch. Suggest some investigation.
The error code 30 is "the motorcycle has overturned" pointing to the tilt switch.

ahh hope its that then although you mentioned fault would appear in temp window? i didnt realise maplins would be open sunday but are so will try them
first thing. With resistors does it matter which way round in circuit there mounted?
Cheers for all the help so far everyone

Just splice inline linking the black/blue ring & yellow/green to ECU.
Hope this helps.

Not you jim i was refereing to malc's earlier post i thought i was looking just in the temp bit.
Well ive tried the resistor which has removed the 30 on the clocks and we can now see trip and total mileage plus amber engine light been removed
which is good but still doesnt want to start - i thought i saw a weak spark but might have been my imagination . Also theres no smell of fuel and the
plugs arent drenched from several starts but im sure the fuel pump is pumping.
Any other ideas?

With the ignition on are you getting power to the coils and injectors. Re- reading the wiring diagram the ECU gives an earth so as long as the
ignition is on a positive feed should be present if not then you will need to trace further back.
I have U2Ud my mobile number.
