Leaky sump - R1

With my carbed R1 in place in the car, there seems to be some seepage from the sump.

Doesn't seem thick enough at all for oil, nor watery enough for water - it is slightly oily in colour and texture.

Do you think it could be the seal in the water pump failing, and letting the oil and water mix? Whenever I drain the water, it is never clear, but then again I am not sure it should be.

Hopefully it is nothing serious...

James

Normally if you mix oil and water you get mayo which is very gloopy.....

Is it a lot of oil or a light smearing around the sump.

I had a lot of issues with my carb'd R1 sump (because I'd overtightened the bolts - on my thrid sump before I even got the engine started!). When I finally had it all sorted out, there was still a little oil around the outside of the sump which seemed to be a leak - turned out to be the overspill from when I filled the oil making it's way down the side of the engine and dripping off the sump.

It is a light smearing I would say, you can see a couple of drops forming at a couple of places.

I haven't overfilled the oil - I have only topped it up to about 2/3rds of the oil level glass thingy.

Sorry, I didn't mean oveflowing with oil, but when I filled the engine up I spilled some down the side of the engine, which has made it;s way down the enigne and formed drips on the sump. Just wipe it all clear with a cloth and see if the drips form again.

With regard to oil levels, the R1 uses oil quite quickly, so the bst bet is to fill the oil level to the top of the viewing glass while the engine is under tickover and keep it well monitored as you will need to top it up quite regularly.

Ah ok. Well I will give the sump a good wipe, but I am not sure that is the problem.
