Importing engine from USA
Anyone imported an engine from the US?
If so, say you paid £1500-£2000 for a second hand engine, would you be hit for import duty? Or how much?
And how much would shipping be?
Is it worth it?
Lastly, don't them have restricted engines in some states? Is that another minefield?
Sorry, but Thanks
Ed

Import duties will be VAT + Import tax which iirc is 3% of the total bill (Including shipping.)

California has a lot of restrictions on engine mods and stuff but I don't see that affecting an export.
What are you looking for second hand LS or a old small block?
You could get a crate small block for that.

Hi, Don't know if it helps but I imported a chevy V8 from the 'Engine Factory' in 2005 & the rates then were:-
Duty=3.8%
VAT=15%
Handling charge=0.8%
Brokerage=0.9%
Freight=18%(by Air)
I would Google to find out what the rates are today.
The whole thing was painless, the engine was flown into Birmingham & I hired a Luton Van with a tail lift, they fork trucked the engine into the
van & I slid it out onto a small trolley on castors when I got it home.
All the best,
Brian.

Can you not import it as classic car parts, and avoid the duty?

As far as my deal with importing goes, i'd say never to order expensive stuff.
I'm sure that engine of yours only costs about £300-400

Cheers all,
It isn't a V8, though I'm in the Cobra club, and it has recently become less value to import V8's.
I'm looking at an R1 on Ebay and I have a brother in New York who could accept it and forward it on.
I would buy from Malc but for a 5VY with no ancillaries he quoted me between 12 and 15 hundred.
Had no idea old R1's had got so expensive here!!
So I hoped for a few hundred more I could get the Ebay one which looks pristine and though it has been sitting a while, it has a claimed 250 miles!

You should be able to get a 5VY bare engine for around £1000 no problem here in the UK, its just a matter of waiting for one to come up.
Better to buy local and be sure what you are getting before you pass on the cash :-)
