Caterham Hayabusa
Hi everyone,i need some advise if possible.I have a Caterham Hayabusa which Martin Keenan (top guy) fitted the engine/reverse box/props etc.
I have had the car back for a few months.
As i engage first gear the car jumps forward and makes a loud clunk,as i'm miles from Martin its not really possible for me to drop in to his
workshop.Is there any way to adjust this out?
Also are there any decent BEC specialists in Herts?

Sounds like the clutch is dragging. What sort of slave cylinder setup has it got fitted?

I emailed Martin 15 minutes ago and he just replied,how impressive is that!
He seems to think its clutch related as i have not used it for a while and has advised me to rock it in gear with the engine off.
I will look into the clutch slave cylinder and come back on.

Not all that uncommon... what kind of prop are you running? Is it a 'torque resilient tube' type?

Bike engines do tend to make a bit of a clunk and feel like they're urging you to go forward when you engage gear. It will feel very clunky and
like it's jumping forward if you're used to driving a normal tin top, more so if you don't have a TRT prop.
My R1 Indy had a similar feeling as does my road bike (Triumph Tiger).
As said though, wrth checking the clutch adjustment though just to be sure (don't over adjust it as bike clutches can tend to pop inside out if
you over depress them).

It looks like a standard Busa slave cylinder with a braided hose going to a remote resevoir.
The props are of a sliding type if that makes sense,i purchased a Nova cush drive to be fitted but there was not enough room to get it in.The car
really jumps forward when engaging first gear.
Any decent engineers in the Herts area?

Does it jump even when the engine is warm, or only when cold ? Fairly common with a cold engine as the clutch tends to
drag.

You could be correct,but im sure it was not as bad when i first got it back.
I need to get it to someone to adjust the clutch initially i feel.....

Its when its cold,i will take it out at the weekend and see if it improves when warm and report back! Cheers.

Once it's engaged (after the clunk) does the car stall or surge forward as if the clutch is up ?
If so then the plates have stuck together, not uncommon on bikes that have stood
a while.
I had an old GPz550 that did it regularly, had to hold the brakes and slam into gear
to break the plates free.
If it's an adjustment issue and your not up to doing it yourself I suggest finding a
friendly bike shop, they'll sort it.

It doesnt stall but it does jump forward as i engage first gear and seems a lot more pronounced than when i first used it.I have left it sitting for a
while and Martin suggests the clutch is sticking possibly.
Once first is engaged the car will idle with the clutch down with no problem and engages drive when i raise the clutch.
The bike shop suggestion seems the way to go...brilliant,cheers for that.
