Striker BEC - weight watchers

Hi all

It's been a long time as the striker has been off the road for a bit with a bent selector fork, and generally borked engine, but thanks to Andy Bates, she's running great again.

However, with the full cage and side impact bar, she's running a bit heavier than i'd like at 480kg.

So looking to put her on a bit of a diet, aim is to get as close to 400 as possible. I want to target the easy stuff first but she could do with a bit of a strip down to repair some poor RAW powder coating. This is my list so far in order of ease/priority.

• Battery to lithium
• Alloy rear hubs
• Replace sierra rear brakes to hi-spec alloy setup
• Replace 15" with 13" rims (with suitable upright changes)
• Lightweight body pack from RAW
• Replace all aluminium panels with carbon
• Make centre tunnel cover removable, for easy removal of electric reverse unit.
• Start eating less / laxatives

Any more quick wins you can think of?

And when it comes to removing and replacing the panelling, is there a way to remove the rivets without leaving a load of crap inside the chassis tubes?

What seats do you have? Get split rims when choosing 13s.
Drill one larger hole at one end and wash out old rivets and waxoyl after.

Seats are a plastic shell affair, not sure on exact weight but pretty light I suspect.

I was hoping there might be a trick way of removing the rivets without having to compromise the tube elsewhere, but I guess that was wishful thinking!

The other obvious one is that cage, but I guess that depends n your personal priorities.

There can be significant difference between the weight of rims, even at 13" size, of course - take a look at something like Force split rims, if your budget will stand it.

Other than that, perhaps you could post pics, so that we can try to spot the 'heavy' looking items, but I suspect you've got the main ones.

Are the tank and rad alloy already?

Thin wall wiring loom can save a couple of kg, but that's probably getting obsessive.

How about dieting? Not much I know for a car but I've chucked 12kg using a nultibullet for me breakfast... If I could be bothered to get off the couch maybe a lot more...

Plus it's free too!

There can also be a couple of KG difference in the weight of different tyres.

This may be a silly question, but are 14s out of the question due to poor rubber choice?

Mel retired about 5 years ago. Jeremy Bulmer is the owner now and Martin is still there. (AFAIK)

Looking at the 'after' photo maybe intermediate side impact bar could be removed without compromising safety too much (your choice whether to compromise safety for weight loss), this would save the weight of the connector to the lower bar as well and would greatly ease access. Not sure if the oil cooler is needed as don't know what engine needs.

Research using motorcycle brakes at the rear. Maybe use lighter prop-shaft (CF).

If money no object use titanium exhaust manifold and pipe and silencer.

Look for a lighter diff.
