Stripped Thread

While checking all the bolts on the engine covers (R1) were tightened up, I found that one of them (holding on the cover next to the cam-chain) had stripped the ali thread in the block and was loose.

All of the threads have gone and I'm now wondering the best way of replacing it. It is an M6 bolt, and the hole is open at both ends:



Could I get away with replacing it with a 1/4" bolt (6.35mm) and would this bolt be able to cut it's own thread in the ali, or should I really use a tap?

If locall I can help you out...Save spending £22 ish on a set...
What size is it ? M6?????

Hi - I'm in Oxford and yes it's an M6 thread.

It says on the website that the length of the inserts is twice the thread dia, so 12mm for an M6 - this is slightly to long for the depth of the thread hole, as the cam-chain retainer is very close to the back of the thread hole - so can the inserts be filed/machined down to suit the required length (about 9-10mm)?

Also, there is so little clearance at the back of the thread hole that I'd be worried about the swarf from drilling?

Is there enough room to just re -tap the hole 8mm and use either an 8mm bolt/stud or a special stud with 8mm one end 6mm the other , and glue it in..........

Not an ideal solution, but I've known people just use a 1/4" whitworth bolt. It does cut it's own thread. Maybe ok if you're not planning on removing it to often. With helicoil's you can get different length inserts. Tapping drill for a 6mm helicoil is 6mm. So if the threads stripped you should be able to use the helicoil without drilling. If you did use a drill there would be next to no swarf.

They can be had in many lenghts..The ones that I use are 1.5 x dia..But they are easy to cut down if you want shorter..

Thanks guys. I have run a 1/4" UNF tap through it and it looks like it will torque up just fine with this slightly thicker bolt. It's not a cover I am likely to need to remove again, but if it does cause probs I will go the helicoil route.
