Sourcing R1 Engine

Looking about for an R1 engine to install in my locost.
Can anyone recommend a reputable source of these engines or offer any advice when looking for an engine?
A lot I see for sale are incomplete/buyer doesn't know much about etc.
I have seen most related sites: R1 Striker etc, and I have joined BEC list.

Cheers

I got mine off ebay last august - frightening (goodbye £800) but turned out OK (mind you it won't be run for ages but at least it looks/feels OK) You then find you need lots of other bits - particularly CDI and reg/rect coils and loom + thermostat housing so it's cost me a grand in all.
LOADS of bike breakers around - probably one local to you, they'd sort you out at a price (and try to sell you every other sort of engine they've got in stock instead)
Hope you get lucky!

Cheers Bob. I've seen a few come and go on ebay, but as you mention all too few with the necessary ancillaries to make a quick and easy install. Where did you source the extra bits out of interest?

Cheers

I got a few of the bits from the seller (KKM near york) - he had some from the bike he was breaking - some he'd sold already. I got other bits from cheshiremotorcyclesalvage in macclesfield, they're just down the road from me. They were dead helpful actually, KKM were good too
I'm going to do DIY sump baffle & oil return tulip and get a TTS re-jet kit (goodbye another ton).
I reckon I might have a smaller/simpler "EXUP fooling circuit" than the one on the net intend to fit it in the plug - I'll see how I get on....

I'd be tempted to look in the US on Ebay and get it shipped back - just watch out for import tax.

At the other end of the scale you can buy the R1 engine brand new from a company called PDM Racing (www.pdmracing.co.uk). It's been a little while since I spoke to them but you get a complete engine with everything for 2k.

Sounds expensive but it even comes with brand new oil and everything including the airbox. They are also fuel injected so should be a more reliable (if that's possible??).

You also don't need to worry about it's history or buying an engine that's been thrashed.

Then again, you can get a couple of second hand engines for that price and still have change for a few pints. It's an option though.

Regards
Chris

Thanks Chris...

I had already seen you website, with details of PDM. Tried to email them last week but no reply. I'll phone to see what they can offer. This may well be a serious option, as you say should be no thrashing problems.

Cheers
