ZX12R - Tuning Considerations?

Right... think I've got my 'mechanical-considerations' sorted out!

Now - onto tuning!

Power commander and tuned-exhaust are already sorted. I'm told by those in the know that the claimed 178bhp & 100 ft/lbs of torque are attainable with these alone.

Would like to get a little more power out of it, but don't want to compromise the durability too much and don't want to 'double-spend' on strapping a turbo / supercharger on it AND changing internals.

Would probably just want to stick to some straightforward internal mods only - porting, flowing, etc.

Also, I see there are a few companies (JE, Wiseco, Muzzy) that do 'Big-Bore' piston kits for the ZX12R. I think the biggest is a 3mm over-bore. What are the cons of going down such a route?

Cheers!

Would it not be simpler, cheaper and more reliable just to start with a ZZR1400 or a Busa?

(I know v. little about bike engines by the way, but it's usually easier and cheaper in the long run to start with the biggest standard capacity/power you can lay your hands on)

Yep - 180-ish BHP is very good, but it's going into a retired-Radical race car which weighs about 150kg more than most 7-inspired BEC's... and I'm a fat b*stard, hence the reason for exploring the options!

Is the Ultima still on hold, then, or has it been moved on?

Sold most of the bits to buy the Radical. I'm keeping hold of the chassis, bodywork and RS4 engine as it's something I want to return to at a later stage.

PS - That reminds me... someone U2U'd me the other day looking for pointers on building an Ultima on a budget. I was cleaning up my U2U inbox and have deleted the message... whoever you are, can you send it again and I'll get back to you!

Cheers (and sorry!).

So... there's the 3mm overbore piston kit at about £350. Up's capacity from the stock 1199cc to 1287cc and CR from 12.2:1 to 13.5:1.

Will require re-boring / plating, so factor in a few more hundred pounds.

Or there's the standard piston bore option with just the raised CR on it's own (13:1). Again - about £350 for the kit, but no re-boring / plating costs.

Is either worth the time / money? Is one more worthwhile than the other?

Where is everyone... I know its Friday night, but surely I can't be the only sad-git still on here wanting to discuss BHP / CR's, etc?

Regarding weight.

If Zil can lose substantial weight, anyone can.

This Radical deserves to be out competing and so do you, so leave the engine as it is and just drive the f*****g thing.

U2U me if you need to speak about familiarisation runs at a well known competition venue in the central belt...
