Blade Engine Tapping/Knocking

Hi...

We are querying the noises that come from the 'blade engine on cold start and tickover. Allegedly with 11K. It doesn't get quieter as engine warms - it doesn't sound too serious although we are just a little anxious about the big bearings. I've been reliably informed that the cam chain can often get noisy - does anyone else have this worry or is it us?

I have recorded the sound and put it onto our webpage (sub index - build diary), if anyone wants a listen. Or it's on the video in downloads section 2nd part (tickover) Any help would be useful!

Video here: CLEEKI

Thanks!

My ZX9R engine sounded very noisy when I first got it going but having listened to a few more bikes I decided that all bike engines make a lot of gearbox noise. Maybe this is what you're hearing.

Sounds fine to me too, the top ends are a bit clattery gennerally and sometimes if the carbs are out of balance a bit it can make similar noises (try putting your hand over a carb trumpet one at a time and see if it goes away).
If you want to hear a sick engine then listen to this: My old engine

The noise was the result of this happening to the crank drive gear (the gear that drives the clutch)

When I ran a big end bearing in my previous engine it sounded very similar albeit without oil pressure, so don't be too concerned about the big ends as you'll soon know if they are on their way out.

Im not sure, it happened at the end of a track day last October.
I would guess that a piece of debris from somewhere got into one of the teeth which broke it off, then that in turn got took out the other 15 or so teeth that are also damaged. The only unusual thing that happened that day was when my girlfriend had a go she spun it, stalling the engine. Its possible that she didnt dump the clutch when she spun so the wheels tried to run the engine backwards momentarily, but that happened at the start of the day and it was fine for about 6 hours so Im not sure that had any effect.
Oh well, got lots of engine spares now, Ive got everything I need for two complete engines apart from two cranks

Chris

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Round the bend...

how does it sound in gear under load ?

As soon as we remove the chocks - we'll let you know... (not be long now!)

p.s hows the bending gone ?

We think the bending has gone ok but we try to retrieve the originals to save cost... are still trying!

What do you think Snoop?
