R1 Oil Level Sanity Check.

Please can someone confirm I've got the oil level right on my R1.

Fill it to Max level on window, but this overnight its completely over the window as I guess it has 'settled'

Ran engine for two minutes, oil level immediately drop to 'Min' level.

Turned off engine , oil level slowly rises till its level with the Max level in the window.

Then again over night it rises to cover window.

Have I got the level right? There seems to be a few opinions on when to actually take the oil level!

what you might be seeing is the oil settling (like you have said) but if you're running an aftermarket oil cooler with the pipes on the cooler at the bottom it makes it worse.

I fiquired this out when i fitted an aftermarket oil cooler on my last engine, make sure the pipes are at the top so this doesnt happen.

Other than that i cant help not owning an R1.

I have been told by racers that use the 2004-06 R1 engine in cars to fill up so that when the engine is running at idle, the oil is just about licking the top of the window.
This is what I am planning to do, but can't talk from experience...

i had to refill mine when i fit my sump baffle. i left the sump off for a few days while waiting for the new gasket to arrive, so there was no oil in the engine at all after it all dripped out.

i poured in about 3.2 litres which takes it to just over the minimum mark whilst the engine is running.

Yep, get the oil good and hot then top up with the engine idling. I fill mine to the top of the window to account for oil surge.

the correct level for a R1 when in the bike is half way up the sight glass when engine NOT running

but in a bec the best option is to fill to 3/4 of the sight glass WITH engine hot and running to allow for oil surge

my 2008 is like this and runs perfect
and most of the 200 odd R1 i have sold over last 4 years are same as well

cheers malc

Overfilling without a catch tank is very bad.
It is ok for racers to do this because the excess oil is spat into the tank, but if you don't have one fitted, then this can be sucked straight into your engine and hydraulic your pistons and snapping your piston rods.
So far my 05 R1 Motaleira's oil is running near the top of the window with no oil being breathed, but my engine is in the normal orientation as per the bike and not side on as per a 7.
It might make a difference on left hand corners when the oil is thrown to the back of the engine where the breather is located.
So if you want to find the highest possible oil level, fit a catch tank and check how much oil is thrown out for your engine and deduct it.
That is what Jon from Lynxae told me who races his LR1.

Hi Guys, my first real post on here so hello all!

Does the same thing apply for a Busa engine? I understand that a dry sump is recommended but I'm just using the car on the road for the rest of the year with the intention of dry sump or accusump over the winter.

At the moment the oil is at the full mark (with the engine off immediately after running). With the engine running the level sits around halfway up the sightglass. Should I top it up so it's full with the engine running? What speed do you guys use for setting this level... I heard from a guy at MK that they run them at around 4k and top up to the full mark, does this sound right/ok? The reason I question this is that the second time I asked about it I was just told to top it up to full immediately after running... Then someone piped up a magic number "4.2 Litres" in the background - confusing! I appreciate it's not an exact science but any advice would be gratefully received!

Cheers fellas

Max
