Blackbird Sump

I have a Blackbird engine with a dry sump.... all very good, but I don't think I have a need for such a set-up as I will hardly be doing any track-work and the added weight is not inconsiderable..

I'm also a little paranoid about pump-failure!

So, are there any companies out there who make a good lowered billet baffled sump for the blackbird?

Personally I would be very tempted to keep the dry sump fitted on a bird as its already there.

Think I have a bird sump lying about in garage somewhere if you need one, want me to look see ?

£15 posted if its there.

Got mine from Westfield (Megabird Wet Sump Kit).

This is a low profile sump which is the same depth all the way across unlike the Bird standard sump which is stepped. Saves a good 40mm or so on sump height.

Not very low cost but it came complete with baffle, sump foam and shortening of the pressure relief valve in the price.

Cost me £267 inc VAT and delivery.

Don't know if they still do them, but it looks like the same sump as their dry sump casting just without the scavange pipe holes drilled.

It may be possible to reuse your existing dry sump. Blank off the pipe holes, fit a baffle and some baffle foam if you want. Your pressure relief valve must already be shortened for your sump so that saves a job.

As an indication my sump is about 45mm deep (outside depth so probably 40mm or so internal) and I have overfilled the oil level a little too.

As an aside. If its an injected Bird engine you have, I have a spare Westfield airbox (which I know you can't get any more) with a Blackbird injection mounting plate bonded in. Cost me over £200 for just the bear glass fibre mouldings, but if anyone here is interested, they can have the complete thing ready to fit for £80 posted. (Sorry for nicking your thread)

Cheers

Mike
