R1 oil level light?
I've got an 5VY R1 ('06), baffled and breather mods done feeding to a catch tank. I get no oil in the catch tank, just a little
condensation. It's also got an oil over fill as recommended by those in the know.
Now the problem. When running at constant mid revs (7-8000) on the motorway the oil level light comes on. Pressure remains good (70-80psi). Ease off
and it goes out; push on to 9000+rpm and it goes out!
As the engine revs increase, the level drops but that doesn't account for it going back out at higher revs.
It's done 4500miles now and not blown up including one run at 90+mph (abroad) for 1 1/2 hour so...

My R1 engine used to occasionally put the oil level light on on dual carriageway runs, so about 7000 RPM. Letting off the throttle and cycling the
ignition would clear it. It only happened when the oil level was genuinely getting a bit low but nothing catastrophic. It happened once on the
motorway. I drove to the next services, to top up, at reduced revs - the light didn't come back on. I can only think that the oil pump works
at its best and takes up a lot of oil at middling revs, causing the sump level to drop.

"...when the oil level was genuinely getting a bit low..."
I thought this on the French run recently and so topped up but it didn't alter. If anything it got worse??
I had the problem when I first ran the car but it stopped happening after a while and is now back since I changed the oil. Level is the same as before
though.

I don't wish to hijack the post, but how do you ensure that the oil level light works at all? I could never get it work on our car, it is always
ON, without the engine running, at idle, at revs... I assumed it was to do with the engine being in a car or the baffle... ?
Sorry, can't help your problem, but I have heard from others as well that the oil level light is useless for them, too...

Where's the oil in your level window? Is your level switch clear of the baffle plate? I had to file the hole in mine. It could be fouling and
jamming it. Bike forums complain about the level light so it's not BEC specific.
Back to mine...
I did wonder if it was getting froth on the top of the oil and the switch coming on because of that. Then at higher revs the oil level drops a bit and
the frothing is reduced??

Personally, I didn't wire the level switch in on mine but fitted a 6psi pressure switch and a capilary oil pressure gauge. I just check my oil
is at the top of the window.
At 70mph, my oil pressure is at about 60 psi, at 30 around 20-30, at idle about 6 psi so my oil light flickers.
Is your engine sideways in your car or in the normal bike orientation?
If it is sideways, then your oil could be subjected to cornering forces which it was not designed to do and the oil level is "low" as it
moves front to back on the engine.
In the normal orientation, the acceleration and de-acceleration is probably lower than the cornering forces so the oil is not moving as far from
front to back on the engine.
The switch is recording a slightly lower than normal level because of this.
As long as your oil is at the correct level in the window (mine is at the top with the engine off) and you have good oil pressure, then I
wouldn't worry,
Just don't be tempted to keep filling as you can cause engine damage with too much oil.
Just disconnect the switch and enjoy your car!

Yes it's mounted longitudinally but it's not a swill problem as it comes on at steady strieght line motorway speeds.
Not too worried as 4500miles in and it's fine (not blown up) but just curious to know why. Would just put it down to the swich being high up;
The switch is more a "oil level below full" than "oil low" and the level drops as the revs increase, ...but why does it go
out at higher revs ...and not happen after the oil has done a few miles?

Hmm, I did consider if it was vibration related...
Isn't it FUBAH (H for hope)?

Mine does exactly the same as yours Ady. I am not too worried about it but it is strange how it doesn't happen if the revs are increased.
