04-06 R1 Cooling System

I know this has been covered before, but my install is slightly different.

Been having problems for a while killing engines and think we've tracking it down to air locks in the head.

I've attached a picture of some cooling system setups, the first one (top left) is the current setup that I have in the car.

The radiator is as per the picture, flat (well slightly angled) at the front of the car.
It uses a coolant swirl pot on the exit of the head, feeding a booster water pump which then feeds the radiator. This then exits the radiator and goes to the water inlet of the engine.

Due to the position of the cylinder inlet and exit ports on this R1 (ie not from the head) we think we are getting air locks in the head, and the swirl pot position is not helping matter by allowing air to get into the system.

The second two pictures are expansion tank version, one T'd after the exit of the engine and one T'd on the entry to the engine.

Any got any suggestion as to which would be better, any opinions on the current system (good or bad).

Ideally the option with the expansion tank on the engine exit side is ideal as that is where the space is, but is this a good idea?

Any suggestion welcome.

Mine is like alternative option 1 except I don't have the booster pump, and my header tank if fed from the small top outlet in the polo rad instead of T'ing off the large top hose. The cooling works fine, and is always around optimal temp :-)

This is the best working way to plumb your car. Link to thread
Diagram is at the bottom of the page.
The header tank should have a small pipe into the top say 6-8mm and the bottom pipe should be about 16mm.
Plumbing your header tank across the flow and return from the engine will self-bleed the air. Just make sure the header is at the highest point in the system
Where you fit yor boost pump (if you need one) is up to you. I have a rear engined R1 with a front rad and mine works perfectly without one.

If you are using a swirlpot, should n't the water be coming in at the bottom so as it rises, so does the air?
In your "current" set up drawing, the water is being forced down which might be carrying the air with it.

How did your cooling problems manifest? Did your engines just go bang all of a sudden? Or did you have really high temps constantly? We have done as per the link suggested above - i.e. all hoses following the same directions as on the original bike (anything going out of the engine to the top, and anything coming into the engine from the bottom of the rad) and it seems fine. But you got me thinking now... so what exactly did you experience?
