R1 noises and questions
Never having had a bike or BEC before, I don't know exactly what mine should sound like.
Since I had it in the car and started it up, it seems to rattle a bit at idle from the cam cover. Are there any known issues about loose cam
chains/tensioners? It could be normal I suppose...
Also, when balancing the carbs by ear, the pulses I hear definitely get quieter towards carb/cylinder four (towards the front of the car).
Since driving to and fro a little for pre sva checks, when putting my foot down up to 5000rpm or so it seems like good (although not brilliant)
acceleration, but after that the revs just don't seem to want to rise quickly or go over 10k rpm. I have since balanced the carbs with more than
just a rubber hose and it sounds better when revving the car in the garage. Is that kind of performance a trait of slightly unbalanced carbs?
I do intend to take the car to bogg bros but I just want to see if I can do something just to last me until then.
Thanks
James

My 5JJ 2001 R1 has had a slight tappety rattle from the left of the cam box from new, I guess rear end of the cam box in car orientation.
Dealer had Yamaha UK technicians to it, they'd had several the same and couldn't find the cause, bike has been fine.....

If the cam chain end is rattly, it could be the automatic adjuster wearing out. To check, undo the screw on the adjuster, insert a small flat screw
driver and turn clockwise to release the pressure, let it go to spring back on then turn anti clockwise to tighten slightly. If the noise goes then
your adjuster is going.

if its struggling to rev to the red line then it is probably running lean, do a plug chop and check what they look like. If it is lean then you will
have to drill out/fit larger jets.

Thanks for the replies! Puts my mind at ease re the rattling.
The carbs aren't dynojetted so probably I am thinking the jets are dirty or not big enough.
I will try the plug chop and see what I get.
Thanks
