Prop to Diff.... 4 bolts.... how tight?

I have been told the 4 bolts fixing the diff to the prop need to be about 50lb and nylon nuts?

My are nylon nuts and i have tightened them with a spanner and ratchet as hard as i physically can.

Is this sufficient?

If you are using 5/16" UNF or M8 bolts that sounds too tight.

Normal for a production car was a tight as you could comfortably make them with a normal length ring spanner. I would guess that would be about 40ft lbs

Key thing is to check them for tightness after first run and again at 500 miles.

Yeah, it all about the checking!
- Last time i looked they where all a turn of tight. However, being nylocs, they where proberbly like that for months without worsning.

why don't you drill and lockwire them? that way the nuts could come off but the bolts wouldn't go anywhere.

If it's a Ford diff there are no nylocs on as standard. They use coated bolts M10x1 size and don't usually suffer any problems so just Loctite on them should do the job nicely.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

I was going to say the same... I don;t have any nuts on my prop/diff bolts - they were blue bolts from the Ford main stealer and just tighten up into the threaded hole on the diff flange. So far so good (4 years on)

As said above - if a standard ford diff then there are no nuts as standard. Just little blue bolts (I'd recommend getting new ones from your local ford parts place) and the torque is 37 ft/lb which is pretty much hand tight.

Hi

If it's an English axle with one of the smaller flanges fitted it will be nut and bolts. For tightness at BT says above. I usually put a dab of lock tight on just to be sure.

Cheers Matt
