Safe cruising RPM?
Have a bit of a drive this evening (2003 R1).
What kind of RPM do you guys travel on motorways at?

with my 2006 5VY engine and 3.38 diff, im doing around 6800rpm at 70mph

80mph = 6k RPM............. : 3.38 diff being driven by a Hayabusa on 225/50/15 tyres.

I tend to sit at around the 8-9000....
In all seriousness, I tend to sit between 7500-9000 (zx9r with 3.62 diff) and sometimes I sit and think "what the fck must this be doing to the
egine - I wonder if Mr Kawasaki envisged his bikes sitting at the equivilent of 150 for an hour at a time)..
and then the though passes....

The doge viper I worked on did 50 MPH per 1000 RPM in top. 70 MPH = 1400 RPM.

Just in case we get back to usefull posts...
My '06 5VY with Freelander diff runs about 6400 at 70mph in 6th
The engine is happy to run at those revs (and more) for hours.

ps...13500 in 1st also gives 70mph!

Has your chassis been designed to take a freelander diff from the start, have you modified it to take the freelander diff, or have you got an adapter
bracket that lets you bolt a freelander diff into the space there a ford diff would mount?
i quite fancy getting a new freelander diff, and im sure once upon a time i found somewhere that sold brackets that lets you bolt a freelander diff
into where a ford diff would go, but now that im actually trying to find one, i cant seem to find who sold them

mines currently about 9K @ 70mph lol ive got a 3.14 to go in though.

Hi Jon,
I get about 10mph per 1000rpm in top gear in my Indyblade. That's with a 3.62 diff. and 15" wheels.

Been out in mine tonight the first time with a working rev counter, at 70mph the engine is @ 6100rpm with a 3.38 diff

Cheers guys, chucked it down last night, so im out this afternoon.
I have no idea what ratio my diff is?!?
Its on 14" rims with 185x60's.
If i remember correctly, it does about 6700rpm at 70mph, although my speedo is out

Ditto exactly 1000 per10 mph same set up
If you don't like the noise you may have the wrong engine not the wrong diff

The chassis was built to take it as thats what I planned to use. Shouldn't be hard to make up mountings though as there's just 2 tapped
holes at the back by each drive shaft (only mounted using one each side) and 2 by the nose. So mines on 4 bolts.
With the 5VY it does give a very long first, and a high top. Both of which have thier good and bad points. Bit high off the line but no changes to 70.
Top is nice on the M'way but in a 7 you'd need to be going down hill with a following wind to get to the limiter; Not got thier in the
Fury yet but it's still pulling like a train at approching 140!

my viper v10 powered 7 is geared to do 71 @ 1300 rpm in 6th, it'll do 61 in 1st @ 6000 rpm

Thirded here.
My 893cc blade, 3.62 LSD and 15" wheels gives 10 MPH per 1K revs in top gear (i.e 70mph = 7000 rpm)
Drove from Plymouth to Stoneleigh last May (some 200+ miles with no trouble at all - though I do have a Polo rad which keeps running temps nice and
cool.)

Don't see why not.
After all, its only approx 2/3 of max rpm (equating to something like 4000 rpm in your average family saloon - which I know is above the usual 3k but
certainly won't cause any engine damage.)
Anyway, how often are you going to be driving on motorways? (not really the most fulfilling domain for this type of car.)

On my 600cc bike, I will cruise at anything between 6k (70mph) and 8.5k (on the autobahn at ~100) for hundreds of miles. That is about 2/3rd the max
rpm of 12.5k. I'm sure it will be fine.

Sure. Due to the way its geared (and my, ahem, cruising speed) my Striker generally cruises at between 9k and 10krpm. The engines don't seem
to mind at all. The gearboxes (it's got a ZX9R in it) seem to be made of chocolate, but that's another story...

The car goes on a trailer for motorways.
However, I don't believe holding a bike engine at speed is a detriment to it. Compared to the abuse I give the engine on the track, looks a bit
tame. I would imagine that heat is your main concern and it's dissipation at continued high RPM.
BTW I'm normally 10-11mph/1K revs.
205/60/13 road, 8.2/22-13 slick.
My bike (GSXR1000) is normally held around 8-9K on motorways, but depends on risk-of-enforcement levels.

'expenses'... wait, I'll just apologise....
