Blackbird engine

Does anyone use the Honda blackbird 1100 engine? I haven't seen any cars advertised with them in and just wondered if there was a reason for this. They seem pretty cheap to buy and bigger capacity than a blade.

The engines have a reputation for blowing up oil - starvation to no. 3 sounds familiar. If you can find a reliable cheap way to prevent surge, then it is a lot of bang for your buck...!

There are quite a few Blackbird engined cars out there.

They did have a tendancy to suffer from oil starvation when fitted longways into cars, as opposed to transverse in the bike or back of a mid-engined car.

This has largely been addressed using accusumps. So factor the cost of an accusump plus the associated valves and pipework into your budgeting.

mines a bird, problem free for for 5 years.

No accusump but a shortened baffled sump and a healthy respect for long fast turns. A bit of healthy oil over fill.

and yes lots of BANG for buck.





been a bit of a rush job really, bodged it all together in just 5 1/2 years.

Hi

i have had a std bird indy with accusump and had no probs.

also if you remove the balancer shaft this will increase oil pressure and reduce the poss of oil starvation,

nice cheap power,

i had around 130+ bhp " the wheels

around 160 " engine on carbs

injection will be nearer 170 bhp

at bogg bros last jan (08) mine got 165 at the wheels. More than happy with that.

standard carbs with tts filter and dynojet kit only.

i have one in my MK indy,it's a bulletproof engine (with accusump) and it is
as quick as my MNR (R1 injection)
go for it!

I recently bought a Fisher Fury with a Blackbird engine. I took the advice of many people in the know and bought an Accusump. AB Performance (they're regulars on this forum) were fantastically helpful with advice and put together a complete kit for me, including the fabrication of a necessary non-standard part. Better safe than sorry.

It's the only BEC I've ever driven so have nothing relevant to compare it to but all I can say is it's very quick.
