R1 Cooling temps
Hi just wondering what your R1 engined kit car sits at regarding cooling temps. Mines an 02-03 FI engine with only the front grill for air to get in.
On the road mine sticks at between 68-72 deg and will jump quite quickly from this point if stuck in traffic. Does this sound normal?
Also what should the engine tick over at cold start mine goes upto 3000rpm then warms up and drops to 1300-1400rpm.
Cheers
Adam

I'm using the bike rad in mine and runs around 74-84 mark but goes up quickly in traffic until the fan cuts in at 105 i believe.
Ticks over at about 2500 cold and about 1100 warm.
So sounds reasonably normal i f you're running a slightly bigger rad.

Cheers, it is running the polo rad but good to hear the figures are sensible. I am now wondering if a bonnet scoop may help reduce bonnet temps that
little bit extra although ruining the smoothe lines.

I was going to post the same question today, but I suffer from getting the temp up.
When I bought my kit I think it was TimC from here who said that I probably didn't need the race spec rad, but I bought it and whilst out a
couple of days ago the highest temp I saw on the clocks was 52deg.
So I assume that if the water is not getting up to temp then the oil won't either
ETA: At start up approx 2000/2200 revs then drops down to 1000/1100

Sounds like my startup revs are a bit high but if i drop my idle once warm it will stutter when below 1000rpm so im not sure if i have a slight miss
fire or other issue.
Dave thats quite a difference, whats in the kit just an ally rad? how have you plumbed it in as i know the kit Marc sends makes the setup different as
bottom hose links to the oil cooler rather than the top that i have seen on other R1 engined 7's

My R1 (06) runs between 72c and 85c depending on the weather. It'll hit 90+ on the track in summer.
Fan trips in at 105c and although it controls fine on the fan, I don't like to let it get that high. It's easy to stall when it does, so I
flip the override switch at about 95.
If I have to stop quick and then idle (motorway jam) it rises fast and I tend to pre-empt the fan with the override switch.
Idle is about 1200rpm and around 2000 when cold but not for long.

The set up is the same with the oil cooler on the bottom hose, the rad is just a 4 core ali rad

I'd be wanting to see higher than 52 Deg for sure - tape up/block some of the rad +or grill area to get higher temps... if water is that low I
imagine oil will be too - definately lower than i'd want to be ragging a bike engine

Its ok - I wont say I told you so. No issue though - tape it up or if you want something more permanent, make a ali cover for part of the rad.

If the temp is not getting above mid 50s then I'd check the thermostat. Chances are it's stuck open.

That's a good thought.
My engine is an ex-race engine so they may of not had a thermostat in the engine, I know that when I used to build my own race engines for my Pug 205
I never put a thermostat in them
