R1 Coolant problem
Evening all.
Waiting for AB's input
Here's a strange one for you, Yamaha R1 Carbed.
haven't been near the car for about 2 months,
decided to fire it up and noticed no coolant in header tank so topped it up well the amount it took filled the system would better decribe it (put it
down to a leaky rad or joint, wet a couple of plugs up trying to start it, quick visit to sand bast cabinet cured that, fired up OK. having my tea had
a thought the water might be in the sump, pulled the plug, yes lovely white emmulsion, so left it to drain, had a look tonight, coolant system is
empty and contents are in the sump draining tray, plugs show no sign of water or any wetness, I'm ruling out head gasket as it'd the
entire contents of the system that's leaking,
I'm thinking a leak between oil cooler and it's water jacket or possibly water pump and crankcase,
any input appreciated

When you drop the sump there is a small pressure relief tube with 2 O rings, top and bottom.
I wonder if it's coming through here ?

bet you only had water in the system no antifreeze and is cracked block or pushed coreplug out in head
done it myself

but the small pipe is water pump overflow

I can't see it being your water pump, if it were then it would be a worn impeller shaft and the water wouldn't run through it that fast, I
have the Yamaha manual here on cd, so I'll have a quick browse. I have seen snapped impeller shafts on bikes that have been used without
coolant, when they freeze up and you try to start the engine it snaps the impeller shaft. but the collant still won't make it into the engine,
as the impeller is driven off a dog out of the engine with its own seal. So that leaves the oil cooler or a nackered block!

Just had a look at the manual, and copied this from it,
Note:
.the water pump and oil pump are combined into one unit (oil/water pump assembly)
.it is not necessary to remove the impeller shaft unless the coolant level is extremely low or coolant leaks from the oil pan.
Hope this helps, failing that then check your oil cooler, you can check it by removing it and conecting a hose pipe to one end and putting your thumb
over the other end and see if water leaks out anywhere.

sorry for delay in reply - been manic at work
As I remember it the R1 has a water pipe that is held into the side of the block with an allen bolt, it has 2 seals on it - the outer o ring maintains
an oil seal on the outer cases and the inner one push fits into the water pump - I would check the inner seal as this would allow water to leak into
the sump.
