R1 sump issues
Hi,
Since i fitted my baffle plate i haven't been able to cure an oil leak from my sump. I've tried a brand new gasket on its own and
i've tried gasket glue but no luck. I have noticed however that there is a pipe that seems to run into the bottom of the engine to the sump, it
has two rubber washers (one at each end) does anyone know what this does? It seems to lead out of a whole in the bottom of the sump? I'm
thinking i may have fitted this wrong?
Any ideas?

Did exactly the same.
Pipe i believe is a leak off from the water pump and has a tiny 'o' ring on either end.
If one falls off during the baffle fitting as it did with mine you get a nice oil leak that runs down the inside of the recess on the sump where the
pipe is.

Ditto.
Check that the o ring is there first then check the sump - make sure not to over tighten it when fitting (I got through 2 sumps before I even managed
to start the car!)

Craig is bang on the money, pipe is an overflow from the water pump so that if the pump seal goes it doesnt fill the sump with water, the sump mating
face is very sharp around the lower o ring aperture. Liberal application of vaseline on the o ring will help as it tends to get sliced as its pushed
into the sump. Also a good excuse for owning a jar of vaseline

I had a leak coming from the alternator cover gasket which was a bit chewed up, so oil was dripping slowly down to the sump - it looked like it came
from that drain hole.

thanks for the replies chaps, i'll get some new rubbers (and er a jar of vaseline... could be a good night in ) . I also seem to be getting a
leak through one of the bolt holes? (rear side opposite the sump plug). I have actually replaced the sump as i put a hole in the first one. i wonder
if it has a crack in it?

After about 3 or 4 goes at replacing my sump because of a leak I finally discovered a hairline crack in the casing around one of the bolt holes. Could
be your problem.
