Screwdriver sounds good - done that a few times myself. Use a towel below it to catch the oil just don't let her indoors see you doing it

Are you trying to remove it from a cold engine? Try getting the engine up to temp?

I've got one of the bike-chain type removers. The teeth on the cam are pretty viscious and although they destroy the filter can they tend to get it off!

the BEST tool is from draper and its a 3 legged filter wrench that takes a square drive in the center and the 3 legs are on gears and the harder you turn the wrench handle the harder the legs bite into the filter, ill try and find a pic

In my very earlier car tinkering days I built a 1974 de-seamed mini. When it came to servicing it I couldn't remove the oil filter either. I resorted to a screwdriver through it, at which point I realised it was the early type with a bolt-on outer case and an internal cartridge! A 13mm spanner would have had it off in 2 mins! Then I couldn't find a replacement for love or money Lesson learned - I have a proper tool now!

Finally got it off with a bit of brute force and ignorance , and with the help of a strap spanner of course
