ZX9 CO2 and HC levels
I'm having problems getting the HC levels down on my engine.
I have a C1 ZX9 engine fitted with a dynojet kit and TTS foam filter.
The best I can manage is the CO2 levels at 0.22%, ( 3.5% is the maximum) which is easilly low enough, and the HC level at 1662ppm and the limit is
1200ppm.
If it was a car engine then I would say the very low CO2 and high HC was an indication of either a misfire or an airleak on the inlet side of things,
but the engine appears to have neither of these. What emmision levels does the stock ZX9 engine produce in a bike?
Adjusting the tickover has no effect.
I assume the key lies in the fuel/air mixture which is adjusted by the pilot screws, but I am led to believe that incorrect adjustment can lead to
engine damage.
There is also a real flat spot in the power delivery between 5 and 7000rpm.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

I suggest you give Mark at MAC1 a ring, they got mine through with their kit.
I'm sure I've got one, just don't know where I've put it

you wont do any damage to the engine as long as you change the mixture back after the sva and dont thrash it to the sva station to much.to get mine
through the sva i had to wind the screws in nearly all the way and it only just ran,but jfos had to wind his screws out.no 2 engines are the same so
its a matter of playing around with them ,i think they are set about 2 turns out as standard so if you mess it all up just set them back to 2 and get

Are you sure about these emission limits? The sva manual lists limits of HC 200ppm, CO of 0.3 And lamda of 0.97-1.03 for engines from 1 August 1995.
I know that a ZX9R C1 would be 1998. Are you using a CAT and Lamda set up? If you are and you don't have any air leaks/exhaust leaks or
misfiring problems then you can only adjust the pilot screws until you get the levels required.

Sorted it!
I took the car to Boggs garage near Malton for them to have a play with it.
They have a lot of experience with bike engines in grass track cars.
They got the HC down to about 990ppm and CO was still well under the limits. This was acheived by by balancing the carbs, they were totally unbalanced
when he checked, adjusting the pilot screws and changing the main jets.
The flat spot was a bit more tricky but has improved alot. A bit of messing about on the rolling road and she drives a lot better. He said he can sort
it completely, but to wait until after the SVA then the emmissions won't matter.
He was playing about with the car for over 2 hours, some of which was on the rolling road, and it only cost me £50!
I definately recommend a visit to Boggs.
The engine is a C1 but a nice man at Kawasaki provided me with a letter confirming the manufacture date of the engine as '94, so no need for a
cat/lambda set up.
