First Drive BEC R1 and gearbox problem

Hi Guys,
Well had my Global R1 out at north weald today, Had a few niggles during the day that we managed to sort but we also had it jumping out of gears. Done some research and pretty sure its the dog rings, Going to try and whip the engine out tomorrow.
Seems people have paid lots of different prices for the dog rings.
Can anyone point me to a direction of a cheap supplier?

And also, the driving was good, i only got a bit of driving in the end, but it was a good experience, Very Quick and crap grip on cold slicks and no torque whatsoever.
The bec is going to be great for track but i am still very much a CEC person!

Erm its pretty much Yamaha or Yamaha isn't it?

You might save a few percent shopping around UK suppliers but as they are OEM Yamaha bits you won't find many places much cheaper than others.

The alternative is somewhere like boats.net in the states but the pound to US is rubbish at the moment and you're likely to get hit by customs.

If you do find somewhere cheap please let me know as I need some gearbox bits too.

cant help with the dog ring question but what weight is the car?
i would have though that a race prep'd global R1 woul be supremely quick? and torque is generally not an issue! they just need a bit of a hammering! .lol

I think the handling course Eddy was on at North Weald shows low rev lack of torque, however Gavin says he was quick

we nearly had a bit of a YBF moment...

I pushed Eddie to get the car started, it fired and he put his foot down.

only problem was I was pushing in front of the rear spoiler..

as he accelerated I was being pushed along by the rear spoiler, screaming like an idiot!!!!

my little legs have never moved so fast.

luckily Ed stopped and I wasnt flattened

Ed, ihad no problems with the gears in the other engine, can't you use the parts from that?

You don't need torque, just keep it above 7k ;-)

It is an option Steve, But as it is a common problem, how long before it will go wrong again. Supposedly we can fit a 5JJ gearbox bits to our engine and they are a lot more reliable....
Just trying to gauge what is best to do, got to obviously check that this is the definite problem first..

Surprised about your torque comments.

If you expect much below 4k then its true you will be disappointed (although fine when pootling on roads). But you have to drive a bit differently (you know that I am sure).

I bet it was great.

Matt

Well there obviously wasn't no torque, but when everyone said the BEC lacked torque, i didn't comprehend to such an extreme....

You have to keep them on the boil, its like jumping of a lazy vtwin cruiser and onto a 250 mx two stroke.... keep it pinned and you won't stop smiling, if you try and drive it like a v6 you arn't doing it right.

The lack of torque isn't extreme.

If you car kept jumping out of gear whenever you put the hammer down then of course its gonna feel gutless.

I hope you get it sorted soon.

Ed, my old engine is a 5jj. The head has 4vx on it as they never changed that, it was only the bottom end that changed.
