Step away from the welder eugene.

Ok folks.

Time to step forward with a list of reasons why this trike is wrong.

You can imagine the conversation just prior to its last journey.
"I'm just nicking off out for a run in this three wheeled contraption that I built, the one with no roll bar and that I don't actually fit properly in. Hopefully, my head will still be attached when I get home."

Front track is a little narrow and/or it's a bit short.
Other than than that and the lack of rollover protection it seems to have come out of the accident pretty well - would have been a lot worse if it had weighed more than 300kg. He was very lucky IMO.

Where do we start!?

Pointy corners, no roll cage, LHD, Unbalanced, and thats before the structural and safety cage etc.

Kindest Regards,
Richard.

It's main problem is it's either got one wheel to many or one missing.

Might look unbalanced, but with the engine next to the driver cog will be closer to the centreline that it looks visually.

tadpole aka reverse trikes are really very stable assuming the front track is wide enough. Trikes with a single front wheel aren't.

I'ts a ZX6R engine.
Based on.

a) My self confessed physical weakness.
b) my ability to lift one.
c) The driver's size.

There's no way on earth that the engine balances him out.

He also sits 'short and high' if you know what I mean.

The complete lack of any roll structure is also pretty damn scary.

looks ok to me apart from
a) engine being on wrong side - surey for UK roads you want to be on the RH side?
b) possibly balance, his body weight vs engine and bike.

just goes to show that even afer SVA/IVA/MSVA, which are static tests, it doesn't mean the vehicle is safe dynamically.

See my comment above on layout - it's all in where you have single wheel for trike stability.

I'm just kidding, 3 wheeled isn't really my cup of tea.

I'm sure if you place the center of gravity as low as possible and place the front wheels wide enough and take a long wheelbase there will be less problems.

You could also make this:

All I can say is it's a good advert as to why *all* our cars should have a rollbar - even a locost could hit a kerb/ditch and flip...wouldn't fancy your chances without a rollbar in that case..

Design-wise, it stood up pretty well to the accident - the passenger compartment is still intact and the guy walked away....with a rollbar his injuries would probably have been lighter...

As to whether it was unstable or not - hard to say from the pictures....

Not wishing to hijack this thread but as a lad I remember (vaguely) seeing a "Stimpson Scorcher?" on the telly. It migh teven have been on Tomorrow's World, which had mini subframe at front then a very looong seat with a single wheel at the back and it had about 4 people sitting on top of the thing.

It looked like something out of a cheap James Bond movie for the bad guys to get away on but I always wondered what it handled like, as Mini front end always seemed quite good when attached to a car.
Does anyone else remember this?
