5PW R1 Thermostat Swap

On my 5PW R1, the small 6mm water pipe outlet sticking out at the top of the thermostat is going to be really close to my bonnet.

I've heard that is possible to replace the thermostat end cap with one from an earlier 5JJ R1, which has more favourable position for the 6mm outlet.

I’ve now replaced my thermostat end cap with a 5JJ one (see pic), and the 6mm outlet now points straight down, which is great. The problem is, the 25mm outlet which runs forwards to the radiator is now pointing towards the rocker cover slightly, and there is no longer enough clearance to fit a hose.

My thinking is that I might have put the thermostat end cap on upside down, although from the orientation of the rubber hose attached to the 6mm outlet, I think the way I have it fitted would be how it would be on the bike. Can anyone help?

Pretty sure mine is the STD 5pw thermostat. What fury bonnet are you using?

Also you need to either put the bobbin mount back on the side of the head or put short bolts in the holes, they go straight through. See here

This is how my stat looks. Very little room between top hose and cam cover

Thanks for the reply,

I think yours is the 5JJ housing too - I remember speaking to Ian a while back and he mentioned he’d needed to make the swap.

On the original 5PW part, the 6mm pipe is on top of the housing, facing outwards towards where the radiator would be on the bike. I’m using the classic bonnet too, and I couldn’t get a 6mm hose on the 5PW thermostat without having to lower the engine a bit.

My pipe runs are a little different (I’m using the R1 radiator) but I’ll take another look at the clearance round the 25mm hose, hopefully it should be ok too.

Having a think about it, I think the 6mm pipe run would be easier for me if I did fit the cap the other way round. Does anyone know if it’s OK to switch it round the other way - I can’t really see why not?

Thanks for the heads up on the bobbin mount!! I took that off ages ago, so I’m not sure if I still have it. I’ll get some shorter bolts if not.

Long as it seals I can't see why not, though mines all fitted fine and it's the same as yours is now. 5PW stat housing with the earlier cap like you said, checked last night.
