Have I killed my gsxr engine???
Hi guys
Just got home from a little post wash blat in the car and I have a small oil leak above the oil filter. The crankcase has a cast bulge above the oil
filter and there is a small rubber seal at one end which is the source of the leak. The engine was really hot and is now really slow to turn over???
Have I cooked the oil and partially seized it? I have never run an oil cooler on it as space won't allow and was told for normal road use in out
country it won't need it. It's never done this before.
Cheers sam

I would doubt it. Have you checked that the battery has plenty of juice.

Cheers for replys
I have connected up the jump leads to my spare battery and still the same. It turns just very slowly. Does anyone know what the seal above the oil
filter does??? Is it some sort of pressure relief valve?? I'm just about to go and try again now it has cooled. Fingers crossed.

Connecting a spare battery is not a very good way of jumping the battery. Charge it or jump it from a running car.

Right got it running but it sounds rough. It also seems to be emitting water from the exhaust???? Just drained the oil and there are some tiny metal
particles in the dumped oil?? Not looking good is it?

Water could be just condensation...
I'd suggest not running it till you find out whats wrong. Stop further potential damage

Yeh I did think condensation but there is way to much water for that, it's full on water droplets and just after a 20 min run. O well sump off
tomorro I guess.

Check coolant for creamy stuff and oil visa versa...
Sounds like you might of cooked the head gasket...

Sorry to hear this, I had hoped it was just a failed regulator.
Head gasket failure (water jacket to piston) could cause the water you have seen.
Not sure about metal in the oil.
How hot did the water get? If you dumped the water and drove hard for a while then that wouldn't be good.

No water stayed below 90 thinking more cooked the oil. I'm thinking more big end failure. Gutted as was taking it to silverstone for f1 at start
of July. Not sure how much work is involved for big end change.

Not sure why big end failure would put water into the exhaust, but sounds like you will need to do some engine work.
Which model of gsxr engine have you got?
If you have the budget then the quickest would be to swap in another engine, and then rebuild the one you have in your own time (winter). You could
then either keep as a spare, turn it into a special one, or sell it on.

What sort of price is a second hand bare block and with the running gear and electrics I have will a busa lump plumb straight in??? Mine is a 2004
motor. Do you think this was caused by not running an oil cooler? Thanks sam

Check e-bay to get a price guide (£800) I think the engine on yours is shared with K3 model, although make sure you check carefully!
Malc at Yorkshire engines is probably the best source of information on whether the gsxr1300 would fit and will be able to give you prices, which
although more expensive than e-bay are guaranteed to be good engines.
I am a bit confused about how you know the engine got really hot. If the water temperatures didn't exceed 90deg then do you have an oil temp
sensor? what oil pressures were you getting. Oil surge was a problem on these engines in RGB (from what I remember
http://craigsphoenix.se7ens.net/build.engine.htm ).

Hey matt. I'm running the standard gsxr clocks so have no idea on oil temp or pressures. I'm thinking the oil got hot by the fact of the
smell of the oil and the rubber gland seal on the cast bulge above the oil filter had become very soft. Cheers for help

Quick update, it's looking like the crankshaft balancer shaft bearings have failed.

So, if you haven't got an oil cooler (the bike comes with one as standard), how is the engine oil hose plumbed?
Do you have a bypass hose (i.e. a hose that pretends to be an oil cooler) or are the oil cooler pipes blocked off?
Blocked off would be bad, as you wouldn't get the flow you need. Just trying to understand what might have caused your problems.

No have a braided cross over pipe as I know you can't block like the busa as the oil restrictor causes one side to starve. I'm a bit
puzzled myself. Had sports bikes for years without any issues.

I don't know much, only from what I have broken and read. I guess the strip-down will tell you what has gone wrong.
Might be worth including an oil heat exchanger next time around (oil to water job won't take up any real space), and easier to fit than a front
mounted cooler (for which you will also need a thermostat).
Regarding missing driving to F1. I don't know where you will be parked, but generally a boring car will do the job just as well, and if you do
end up sitting in queues then even better.

Cheers matt, engine is now loaded in the back of my trusty golf ready for a trip to work tomorro to start the strip down. The old blade engine I have
taken out has a water cooled oil cooler. Do you know where I can get one to fit the gixxer lump? Cheers

Laminova is a brand-name that rings a bell. I think you can get them from Merlin and/or Think Automotive. http://www.thinkauto.com/laminova.htm
I don't know whether there is a suitable donor for these, but if you can afford F1 tickets then you can afford a new one
I have a Setrab oil cooler and a mocal thermostat on mine, but would have gone with a heat exchanger if I did it again.
Might be worth phoning around the usual suspects (Malc, Andy Bates) as they might have a cheap engine, or some tips. Those guys actually know stuff.

You don't have any contact numbers for them do you matt? As for f1 tickets 150 for three days of f1 BBQ and beers is pretty reasonable I think.
Cheers for ya help
