fueling issues on zx14 engine
Hi All
question for you all
i have fitted a pre pump fuel filter the glass type guase filter etc, ment to be free flowing!,
but i am now experiencing no power idles for a while themn will cut out and the pump is struggling to pull the fuel through iut, so i cant be getting
enough fuel up to the fuel pump, removed the filter and it seems to clear ok and full power back,
can any one recomend a free flowing pre pump filter as i am not sure its safe to run without one??
need it before this weekend though before a rack day

Is it airlocking? I had a similar problem, albeit on a car engine. I changed to a smaller filter and that cured it.

On my 1400, i have a low presure pump next to fuel tank which feeds high pressure Kawasaki ZZR pump which is housed in a smaller custom tank, with a
return pipe to main tank. This system has worked perfectly for last few years.
Look in my photos and you can see smaller tank in engine bay.

poss airlock never thought of that,
may have to think smart on this and filter wise,

Aren't those glass type filters meant only for carbs? As long as the tank is clear of debris you should be OK without a filter - have a look at
the standard bike fitment where they only use a fairly course brass filter.
Finally back on the job!

Hi also forgot to mention i moved the fuel pump from in line with the bottom of the tank to a new position above the tank,
so i guess the pump will have to work harder to get the fuel up, this could effect it or not???

I think you have answered you own questions on this one.
Some of the high pressure EFI pumps are remarkably poor suckers, you have done 2 things that would both hurt you.
Pre-pump filters don't need to be super fine, just need to catch the bigger lumps.
Lucky you have caught it before giving it the beans, as "low fuel flow" and "track day" are the first two ingredients in the
recipe for melted pistons.

So are you just relying on a low pressure pump at the tank end?
Are you using a HP pump suitable for the 1400?
As i said in my earlier post, through trial and error, a low pressure pump (with an inline filter) feeding the correct HP pump (which has a filter
built in pump) and a return line, WORKS!!

Thanks for the comments agian i will prob go down the route you have said ie 2 pumps but have 1 day to get it all working for a track day,
I run a very high flow fuel pump cant remember the flow rate but more than enough for what was required,
Car was running fine before i moved and changed to a pre pump filter and moved the pump location so yes i think i have answered my own questions, was
just getting a little lost with it last night,
move it all back down low so it helps the pump suck the fuel in etc,
i will then go down the route suggested by skippad,
cheers all back in the garage tomorrow to sort it all out, bloody cars!
