Engine options

There's plenty of talk regarding the engine options that come with "street cred," blade, R1 + blackbird etc. But if the price of these engines make them a non-starter for some people would it still be possible to produce a respectable bec using a less atractive motor. The old exup was a great engine and the oil-cooler gsxr 1100 motors where almost unburstable, has anybody got any views on the use of one of these.And yes I am a tight git.

Grasstrackers seem to favour the Thunderace,
Legends make good use of the FJ1200,Drag racers love GSXR1100's and i reckon the cbr1000 and RF900 are underated
motors too,so yeah if it's unfashionable so what,all the cheaper for us,and if you happen to blow it up, then a replacement is not such a big ouch, as against say a 3k hyabusa.
I'm suprised no'ones stuffed a vmax engine in
a car yet, or have they?

In a car, under the bodywork with not as much airflow as a bike, personally I'd only feel safe with a water-cooled lump. I don't see how a air/oil cooled motor could lose enough heat under a bonnet even at speed.
I've heard that as good as an engine is, if the gearbox isn't bulletproof in a bike then its not going to last the life of the engine (Honda CBR1000 was the engine being used as an example).
Its all hearsay but sounds plausible enough to me...
BTW the ZX9R engine seems to be getting popular and the prices have started to rise, but then 2nd hand bike engine prices have rocketed since the Vindicator popularised BECs

would it not be possible to duct air from a fan at the engine? An air cooled bike engine has got to have pretty variable cooling in a bike, stop start low speed air momentum in town for instance. It should be possible to draw air via a fan and blow over the fins? Has anyone tried this I wonder?

The oil cooled gsxr 11 motors are very hardy lumps, with regards to the lack of air flow under a car bonnet I really don't think thats a concern.I have had one of these bikes and used to have it on the rev limiter or very close to it for 15-20 mins at a time, with the bike only moving at walking pace. The tyre pops well before the engine gets hot and bothered.

The yamaha 1000 exup as mentioned in the first post, is strictly a watercooled lump.
They can easily be heavily tuned to produce more power, but the standard clutch basket is very weak when you start poking more than 150 bhp through it/abuse it, so it can shatter and distribute shards/bend crank in explosion etc, so budget a billet clutch basket into the price of it (usually round 300 quid).
If your going to turbo a exup lump, oil pressure can be marginal so needs a helping hand, I know of someone running a turbo lump who has two oil pumps to assist the motor.
Clutch wise, any BEC will probally beneft from a lock up clutch due to the high chance of slippage when wellying it. Ive got a dxf or dwg (cant remember which) of a lockup clutch for a gsx-r that can be adapted if anyones interested, theyre just basically a set of bob weights that sit over the pressure plate and centrifugal force forces cams to push the clutch pack together harder at speed. Means you dont have to go mad with spring rates, but still have a gorilla clutch...
Further more the exup comes with that lovely device known as the exup valve, (exaust ultimate power system) which is a electronically triggered flap valve that changes the diameter of the exaust at given rev ranges and thus makes the motor behave like a small pipe'd motor low down (hence shedloads of low down torque), and rev it up, and you get full bore open exaust, loads of power up top too. Very nice, and runs off the ignition circuit, just buy new exup cables, theyre about 10 quid, and time them up according to the book and they work brilliantly.
I dont have a bec, but I do have a bimota (bike) with a 12k old 1000 exup lump, with a few small tweaks, and Ive got around 115bhp on the dyno, with impeccable manners right through the rev range and so far 185mph (on the clock, caveat emptor!) , but with shedloads of torque and driveability....

Just a quick edit, I dunno where I got 115 from, the paper says 150 bhp, must have been thinking of something else.....

The CBR are reliable but heavier and much less torque than the GSXRs - I am going for a bandit after looking at the torque curves -yes I do have an anorake!!!!!!
