I frigging hate cars.
Today got half way back from dropping the sprog off at school in my craptastic vectra, to find the windscreen fogging up, thought nothing of it, stick
heater on to clear it.
Got worse.
Managed to limp home where a little exploratory surgery indicated it was probably the heater matrix, but no signs of a major leak.
Half way to picking him up, the bloody thing is fogged up and getting through 2 litres of water every 3 miles. Fun.
Managed to limp home (with the sprog), bypassed the heater, boiled my hands a little, found a small leak on the plastic bit of the radiator
(bodge-sealed with a soldering iron)
Missus comes out to check how it's going, complains of eggy smell from the header tank and it foaming a little. I suspect head gasket.
Bugger.

You have my sympathies.
My Saab 9-3 has had issues identified today:
AC Condenser is shot - £550 quoted to replace
Getting an ASC error message - the dealer did a free diagnostic check, wrote the code on the invoice and I've thanked him for his time and
googled it instead. It's either a steering angle sensor (no idea how much but not easy to get at) or needs a new CIM unit (no idea what this is
or does but costs are around £300 for parts on eBay)
It also sounded like it had a bad wheel bearing but turns out to be the road noise from the T1R's I'm running (thankfully).
I'll be buying a condenser myself and getting a local independent garage to drain/re-charge the refrigerant I think and I'll pull the
steering sensor and give it a good clean up to hopefully solve that problem.
Oh, and being GM it's pretty much based on a Vectra...

Actual s#itlist on it:
Rear shocks shot (replaced last week)
Rear bushes looser than a loose thing (waiting for a dry day to swap em)
Radiator fan switch borked (bypassed)
Front driver's side window keeps falling out.
Rear driver's door doesn't do central locking.
Centre console knackered, needs new tabs bodging on to screw it in.
Handbrake lets wheels turn ~5 degrees when on (NFC what that is)
Exhaust blowing... somewhere I can't find.
Good things:
Lots of connectors I could nick off the engine once it dies.
Has 4 wheels.

so do I kit cars to be precise do one job create 3 more, just put a drill through a brand new 3 point harness, frayed it to buggery, IVA fail, would
have been less stressful to poor my money down the drain outside my house.

I like cars since I have stopped working on them and now have a company car!!
Track days ARE the best thing since sliced bread, until I get a supercharger that is!

I think that's unfair on Vauxhall or any car maker. All cars are on the road to ruin the second they leave the line. Most tin tops are given
minimal care and attention and ALL makes/models have their achilles heals.
MkII Golfs were recalled for duff heater matrixes, but half the bloody world bought into the VW reliability claim (remember the dishy bird ditching
her duff fella?)
Older French cars have a bad name for electrics, but they didn't rust anything like Fords did (205s still exist, mkIII Escorts don't).
Audi's command premium price but suffer the same woes of all VAG cars; diesel injector "campaign"
Cars are complex electo-mechanical assemblies and wear out, they need fixing...END

Sympathies all round... I take my A4 Avant in tomorrow to try to find out why the engine light won't go out after several services, costing
thousands so far.

the root cause of your problem with the bearing type noise from the rear is too much negative camber. as the suspension arms start to wear out the
rear camber gradually increases this causes the tyres to wear in a stepped pattern on the inside edges which makes the noise. next time you change
the tyres fit a set of asymmetric and have the rear camber done on a four wheel alignment system and the problem will go away. it affects the saab
9-3 (9-5 i think) vectra c signum and insignia as they all use the same rear suspension arms.
