Hi from Noob

Hi all, firstly found this site by mistake even though i have been trawling the net for infomation and find a site in the good old UK.
anyway, im not building a BEC more of a BEQ (bike engined quad) common in the USA and need some help.
i have nearly fitted a K1 gsxr 1000, into the frame but have a major issue with clearance of the sump, 45mm to be exact, i have been told that a dry sump is the way to go, but the cost is way to much.
i have seen the wet sumps but a shorter pan, are these any good, and good points or bad before i go and get one

Try Andy Bates at AB Performance, they do Billet sumps, which are shorter, but not sure how much.

You could make your own if its ali (or steel I guess)

Just chop the amount of the bottom, measure the volume removed and add the volume back on the sides as extra 'wings'. Known as a winged sump and may need some baffel plates this is not a difficult job if you have the skills. Certainly locost compared to a shop brought version.

Have a search on here, the methods and design considerations have been covered a good few times.

Wow, thanks guys, I can't belive that I had so much advice in such a short period, I have joinked yank forums weeks ago and nothing, join here and infomatoon comes flooding in, Andy from ab performance is calling me back

As in the USA find someone who can TIG weld and chop down the sump, oil pick etc.

Have a google for pictures of baffle plates, bit of 1/8" tin or 1/4" Ali sheet and copy, it's easy enough to do, just draw around the sump, cut out the outline and puch holes.

Overfill engine by 200ml, if you are going to be cornering hard, pulling wheelies and stamping up steep slopes (which you should be) have a google for an accusump and make a feature on the bike then you can forget the overfill as this will hold a couple of pints in reserve.

You should then be done, dry sump etc may not work well on a quad due to the funny angles involved when playing.

Thanks for the reply mark, just been speaking to Andy from ab performance(really nice and helpful guy) and he said about the accusump
I will have a search on.the internet when I get home.
Would I need to have an accusump if I used a flat pan sump??

When shortening a sump we tend to add volume lost by adding a wing to the sump with a trapdoor baffle
Accusump works by pressurising oil into a container (the accusump) when oil pressure drops a valve to the accusump is openend pumping oil at high pressure back to the oil galleries
It's a great system probably a bit belt and braces for a street quad

That looks awesome!!

If you go for a 360 degree swivel pick up, you wouldn't need an accusump. I reckon an accusump would be a bit OTT on a quad....

like the one i posted the link for on ebay,

are they easy to fit, (the swivel pipe) as it looks like part of it is up in the engine??

yeah, if it comes out looking half of what that does i will be very happy

Hi all , sorry i havent been around for a while due to work and family, but anyway has anyone hopefully carry on with the build soon,
so my question is has anyone ever used a "two wheel werks" flat sump,

i have made contact with 2 wheel werks and asked them if they do a swivel pick up, and their reply is

"o it is a stationary pick up. we got away from swivel pick up probably 3 years ago, thats why we use the baffles and trap doors, Cause there are better ways to control oil slosh than a swinging pick up. There is no car on the road that uses a swinging pick up, it is not the best way to go"

does this sound about right

looking to make a custom fuel tank, just a simple oblong box, but the fuel pump would have to go at the front and was wondering what to do about baffles to stop fuel stavation when accerating hard, i have seem foam on Ebay and was wondering
1, is foam the way to go
2, should i get a custom tank built, with baffles/trap doors in it, if so who would you recomend

just a quick update,
the build is still going on, i have the flat sump and a bespoke petrol tank made, the frame has been modified to allow for the air filters, she is now back up on her wheels and im now im just going through the wiring
