Any idea what these are like?

Your links are missing, but I suspect I know the ones you are referring to. They are basically a simple up/down counter operated by a couple of reed switches and magnet attached to the gear lever. There is an additional wire from the neutral switch to show the neutral symbol.

The problem with these is a missed gear change or hitting a false natural can put the counter out of sync until you get back to neutral. The more expensive ones measure engine RPM and wheel speed to calculate the gear ratio, so are not affected by a missed change.
