R1 5VY 06- Oil Cooler
So, I'm working through my Winter/Track upgrade list and next up is to replace the original oil cooler with an external oil cooler. I have done
a bit of research and know what parts I need to order, but have a quick question regarding the install.
I'm going to replace the original cooler with a sandwich and cover plate, but what do I do with the hoses that connect up the old cooler? One
side is T'd from my top rad hose, which I was going to remove, but the otherside has a short hose that connects to the pipe between the cooler
and oil filter?
Also is an oil stat a must, the car is mainly used on the road with 4-5 track days a year!?
Many Thanks
Toby

With the steel pipe that has a short section of hose, I removed the full steel pipe from the engine, cut the small elbow off, tig welded a small
blanking plate over the hole, and painted it satin black. Looks totally standard

I'm feeding mine direct back into the bottom hose going back to the engine.

Ok great, so I have the option to blank it off and leave the larger hose on the elbow in place or extend the existing hose missing out the oil cooler
and connect it to the small take off on the elbow.
Adi, my oil cooler is T'd off from my top hose between the Thermostat and rad, will this be a problem?
Cheers Toby

oil
We have the std R1 cooler .
give it a lot of stick on the road & a couple of times on the track
never a problem , I know the engine has to work harder in a car
But for us it has been fine.
if it runs OK don't fix it.

Do you have an oil temp & pressure gauge fitted to see what is happening to the oil whilst on track?

Have a mechanical pressure gauge, but not a temp one.
so now I expect the inevitable.

That showmine currentlyis. Without the standard oil cooler in the circuit your just providing a by pass for the thermosat that way, which is why
I'm swapping it to the bottom hose.
I've gone for an oil 'stat aftermuch debate. Without one, you need to let it get up to temp for longer before driving hard which is OK in
a track/race car but not always practical in a road car. You then need to adjust the cooling by blanking of the oil rad... again fine on a race car
but not on a raod car.

In the end I've blanked the water feed pipe off rather than re directing it.

Cheers Adi. How's your install going? I've near enough collected all the parts I need now, i'm just waiting on my alloy rad, which
will have the cooler mounted on the front.
